Hi

Am considering buying a used x-type Jag (want e-type! Maybe one day, fingers crossed) for under £4000. Has to be a diesel as the mpg for petrol is ridiculous.

Most that i find have mileages around 90-130k. Now if it was a Lexus, Saab or Volvo that would not be a major problem. I know earlier Jags would be lucky to get to 90k miles i would like opinions info etc on what mileage you can realistically get out of the diesel engine.

Any information etc gratefull received.

Also any alternative suggestions for a similar or even better luxury/executive car for the money would also be gratefully received!

Thanks

I've been considering my next 'new' (used) car & test drove a 70k 2.2 last week.

It was Sport pack, not too many toys & seemed to handle Ok. Nothing special, just OK.

You'll read LOADS about them being Mondeo, underneath the Jaguar badge, but once you start looking - plenty X Type forums - you'll find diferences, in suspension & engine & ... lots things.

My other thought was Mazda 6, as these are Mondeos, in disguise, to quite an extent, also. But seems the diesel to be somewhat fragile, at miles.

Saying that, so many of ALL makes, have dual mass flywheels, which are failing, so costing well over £1000 to sort!! & see just how much you can spend, on something which has been miss-fueled sometime during its life!!

If you check http://www.honestjohn.co.uk look in his Car by Car Breakdown page, loads of good n bad on ALL models.

You might just end up with a Mondeo, or even a Vectra!!

Why £4,000? If this is your max budget, spend £3,000 and have £1,000 handy for repairs which a £4,000 Jag may need anyway.

Cheap exec motors keep their expensive repair costs for life.
  • Not the nicest of engines that diesel cos it's the nasty TDCI lump from Ford. so make sure if it's a highish mileage one that the flywheel has been done. Being a mondeo diesel, sorry, Jag-whaaar it'll need the EGR valve cleaning out every now and then.

No major issues on em 'part from flywheel.

Like your style, have considred that and it may be an option depending on what is available. I am expecting that it will need money spent on it regularly as long as i have it!

Excuse my ignorance but when should the flywheels need changing? And how much is EGR valve cleaning.

We had a C-Max with the 1.6 TDCI and i thought it was powerful enough, good torque. Why do you say it is nasty?

    Thanks

the 1.4 and 1.6 are ok cos they are the Peugeot unit. It's the 2.0 and 2.2 that are the nasty ones!

Flywheels seem ok on anything apart from the 2.0 and 2.2. Hence my comment (and your ignorance lol).

I used to run an old XJ6 (the XJ40 model) and my only advice would be find a Jaguar specialist to look after it. If you find someone good they'll be far cheaper than a dealer and will know all the tricks to keep it on the road cheaply.

I remember on mine it needed a new electric aerial, Jag wanted a fortune, I then found out they used the same one as Vauxhall who charged a lot less.

Given the cost difference between petrol and diesel and that a petrol will probably cost less to buy I'd seriously look at a petrol one unless you do massive mileages.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • I am on my second Jag now, had an XJ40 for 7 years and I have an 2002 X Type 3 litre Sport auto at the moment, I am averaging around 27/28MPG but using it round town alot is a killer. Six months in and not had a problem with it. Don't listen to the posh Mondeo taunts, I believe only 17% of the car is shared with the Ford (maybe a bit more in the diesel version). You'll get a superb ride, handling and the interior is fantastic. Four wheel drive on the 2.5 and 3.0 is good at this time of year as well. Seems to be some real bargains out there at the moment too.

Try these X Type forums to get some more advice

i have had an x type diesel since august and done 10,000 miles in it and it has not missed a beat, apart from when my wife parked it in the back of a bus,
like harveybobbles says a few people have egr valve problems but jagforums post a step by step guide if your half competant with a spanner, i also know some one with a diesel with 180,000 on the clock but has had the dmf replaced at 160,000,

you can make yourself paranoid reading honest john nearly every car seems to have a fault.
