OS style cheat treats

I am really trying to cut back on my spending on food and struggle with the idea of desserts as my kids love expensive stuff which is both bad for them and too expensive for me.
I was thinking before of the things my Mum and Dad used to give us as cheat versions of expensive shop bought creations. My favourites were:
Custard slices: two cornish wafers sandwiched with HM jam and cold thick custard and topped with glace icing.
Cheesecake: digestive biscuits topped with a spread of Philly (well own brand) and a blob of jam
Can anyone else think of any as I thought I might try and make some for my 2 - a bit of a vain hope but it's worth a try!

The other day my kids wanted something sweet after their tea and I only had fruit which they didnt want. So, I told them years ago people didnt have cakes and biscuits and if they wanted something sweet they had bread and jam. They thought that was a fantastic idea and had a jam sandwich!! lol“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Bread and jam is a fantastic standby treat in our house (hm jam too;) ). My mum used to make it into a pudding for us when we were little by making fried jam sandwiches. You can do them in a sandwich maker but mum just used to make some jam sandwiches and fry them in butter (I think she left the butter out of the inside). She would serve them cut in quarters with whipped cream and a warning 'the jam is HOT !!!'0

Thriftlady - that sounds delicious! I might give that one a go tonight.
Not really a cheat, but my mother always used to buy a 10p french baguette from the supermarkets at the end of the day (they just throw them all out if no-one's bought them!!) and make it into a chunky bread and butter pudding. Beautiful hearty pudding, really filling and cost her practically nothing!0 -
My mum used to sandwich cheap biscuits together with jam and top with icing and hundreds and thousands.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

Lol Gingham Ribbon - I used to do a similar thing to that - put a marshmallow on top of a digestive, zap it in the microwave for 10 seconds, sandwich another digestive on top with some jam on and if you want to, drizzle some melted choc on top. Voila - a homemade Wagonwheel!0

Mine like bananas or strawberries cut into a bowl and topped with angel delight (shops own brand though). Another fav is a crushed biscuit in a glass with layers of angel delight and fruit/grated choc.
We rarely have a pudding, this week we did have warm muffins with ice cream and then cold muffins the next day with custard....they enjoyed those and as there was loads of fruit in the muffin and milk in the custard it was fairly good for them."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. This isn't really a cheat but whilst I'm in a nostalgic frame of mind, my mum used to make 'bananas and cream' as a pud. This was a sliced banana in each person's bowl topped with sprinkle of raisins/sultanas, brown sugar and whipped cream. It was lush and I don't like bananas much. Unfortunately I haven't given my kids this as the ones who like bananas don't like cream and vice versa :rolleyes:0

I haven't got an OS cheap treat idea to contribute, just wanted to say what good ideas! I'll definitely be trying all of them, tho maybe not all on the same day:p0

its funny, but the things that were forced upon us as kids seem to be veiwed so differently by my son. he wanted a quick sandwich one day, and there was nothing he liked in the fridge, so i said to him to have some bread and butter, he looked at me in amazement and said "can i???" and he loves it, its a treat for him! (i know i'm a wicked mother:rotfl: ) upshot of it is though, i do treat him to lurpack, because i'm so impressed that a lad will eat bread and butter and enjoy it.

My lot seem to have phases of enjoying a certain fruit they'll all want only apples for a week or two then the apples are left and they just want bananas, so we have a fondue, I melt some chocolate, slice the out-of favour fruit and the children dip the fruit in the chocolate in no time at all the fruit is gone.MFW 1/5/08 £45,789 Cleared mortgage 1/02/13
