Not quite a freebie. They'll take a cut of any money they get you back.

I did just this... a few weeks ago. Not really expecting much more than a few quid.
I was overjoyed when the cheque landed on my doormat, for nearly £500!!
It is worth the little time it takes.

Thanks for the details, Barry. I've moved your post over here as it seemed a more appropriate place for it than the Freebies board. :)

marie - everyone has the right to claim, or attempt to claim back tax. It doesn't matter whether you're employed, seld-employed, unemployed or a child.

As isasmurf said anyone can contact their tax office and ask for their tax affairs to be reviewed re a possible refund. Some of these firms can charge as much as 40% of whatever refund is due to you no matter how big or small. The Inland Revenue pays you your full refund.

How long should it take, and what information would i need to hand if i were to do this?

Just got my final payslip of the year today, and i've overpaid about £2 , which i can live with :D , but i think i overpaid by quite a bit the previous tax year, due to job changes etc.
