What to do with a glut of strawberries?

Options
My strawberry bed has gone berserk this year...only in my second week of picking and I'm getting sick of them already and there is a crop of wild strawberries ripening fast too! Got sooo many I just don't know what to do with them all. 2 x bucketsful today! Even my neighbours are greeting them with a resigned 'oh thanks...again' now!

I've done the au natural, mousse/fool, in crumble, made syrupy gloop for ice-cream and I'm running out of ideas now. Still got loads of jam from last year left so don't want to make anymore. Haven't got a freezer, just the top bit of the fridge but I'm not too keen on freezing strawberries anyway.

What I would like are ideas as to how to best use them....it seems such a shame to waste them. I was thinking along the lines of preserving some in alcohol or alcoholic syrup but which and how??? Also was wondering if it is possible to dry them??? Or even just anything different to do with the perishing things!

Any thoughts and ideas would be very welcome....

mmm give them to me????

:rotfl: Perhaps you could put them on a baking tray in a very low oven and dry them like you do tomatoes? Then you could store them in an airtight container and use on top of breakfast cereal/porridge?

    could you pickle strawberries?

make nice jars of alcoholic strawberries, like you can get cherries etc in alcohol at Christmas. Could make good presents

also balsamic vinegar is nice over strawberries - could you make a savoury starter one night for tea?????

I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this response :p
  • How about phoning your local school or old peoples home and asking them if they would like them? When my daughter was little someone brought in loads of sweetcorn that was spare, the cook served it up for lunch and the kids loved it. :D

    Thanks T2S
Actually I phoned a local Nursing Home this afternoon but was told they are only allowed to use foodstuffs from approved suppliers...the person I spoke to was very apologetic but said they have to abide by the rules! Will try the warden of the Sheltered Housing complex tomorrow...you wouldn't think it would be so difficult to give stuff away would you.....

Wonder if you can advertise foodstuff on the Freecycle thingy??

Here we are sharing between 1 and 3 (on a good day) strawberries betwen the 5 of us. Well nothing tastes like home-crop though.

  • I know you said you didn't want to freeze them, but you could freeze them flat, then you'd always have some frozen fruit for smoothies or something??
  • I wondered if there might be rules and regulations regarding "donating fruit" seems daft doesn't it? If you lived near me I would be round like a shot - I bought strawberries (reduced to 50p for 454g) to make jam. I lady near me puts a notice outside her house "free apples" please help yourself. Maybe that would work

I am so jealous! We only have 2 plants which have not yet started producing either strawberries in quantity, or more plants!

You can put them with some sugar, in either vodka or gin, in a bottle or jar and just shake them now and again. Come Christmas, make a trifle with the fruit or eat with ice cream and just drink the liqueur.

Then again if you have 10-12 lbs you could make a couple of gallons of wine, one of the best wines I ever made was strawberry. Mmmmmmmm
