Toilet flushing question?

Hi all, I live in a house which has a water meter, just wondered what people views were on toilet flushing..
I normally have a wee but don't flush as I usually drink allot of water and am always going to the loo think I've got a weak bladder however when I go for a number 2 I always flush. Do most people on water meters do they same or same I just strange? Just think of little ways to cut down on my water bill. Does the above sound like unreasonable behavior just wanted people take on things, thanks in advance.

I'm sure the saying goes... if it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.

I agree about not flushing it after a wee. But if I had guests in the house, I definately would flush.

Our complication that having 3 young children, it can be a bit confusing for them to flush sometimes and not others (although with the boys it's normally never!). So at the moment, I say to them it's always best to flush.

    Happy flushing!

I live alone. I always flush. If I am in there for a reading session, even twice sometimes.
  • Yep I don’t flush for a pee, I don’t see what the problem is. It’s moneysaving really if I wasn’t on a meter then I would flush 20 times a day!
Don’t see what the issue is really don’t see it as unreasonable behavior, it's common sense. I’ve just come back from backpacking in the far east it’s when you go to places like China and India you really find out the value of clean water. In the UK we don’t know how good we got it!

Could put a brick (or equivalent item) in the cistern.

  • I don't flush after a pee, a pooh I do, for guests it's a must! I've had a water meter for 6 months and I can say that it has really focused my mind on reducing the amount of water I waste even though I was not frivilous before. Just be careful it doesn't become an obsession!!

Try it with a plastic bottle filled with water (that way you can control the level by the size of the bottle) as you may find that, depending on the size of the toilet tank, a brick doesn't leave enough water in there to have the power to clear no2s successfully. My ball c0ck was adjustable so I just turned it down slightly instead so the water was about 2" lower.

I can understand people wanting to save water and indeed money but not flushing the toilet in my eyes is taking it to extremes. If your worried about this apply to your water company for a hippo bag or equivilent.

Those in the STW region can go here:

    http://stwater.savewatersavemoney.co.uk/products/save-a-flush

Its free and saves you putting any bricks into your toilet!

Also most modern toilets now have a dual flush feature which helps save water.
  • I saved around a litre a flush by popping a rubber brick into the cistern. I think it might have reduced my bill by about £8 a year. This was dwarfed by the £120 plumber's bill for unblocking the sewer pipe which he blamed on a lack of volume when flushing away 'big jobs'. I'm all for saving water but 'solids' do need a good quantity of water so that they are dispatched efficiently. I'd suggest having a dual-flush system if you're serious about water conservation.
  • Oh man, you guys are taking money saving to the extreme. Do you really want your house stinking of pee? If not, flush after you've finished!

It wouldn't surprise me if somebody chipped in on this thread to say that they crap in a carrier bag and put it out with the trash to save money.

    What's wrong with that?
