Don't mean to offend anyone but i find the sight of someone else's p1ss or !!!!!! in a toilet really disgusting - I always flush nomatter what. !!!! left in a toilet would slowly evaporate and soak into the surrounding surfaces so if you made of habit of leaving !!!! in the loo it will really stink eventually. Which will probably cost more to get rid of than the cost of the water. I do live in a modern building though so the toilets have the 2 sorts of flushes, so water wastage isn't as much of an issue as with older style toilets.

When you turn the hot tap on catch the cold water use that to make a cuppa of tea - Collect the grey water from the bath and washing machine - Use that where do not require 100% clean water - car wash - water the flower beds - flush the toilet - If you are really cute about saving water and money . It is possible to reclaim on your dirty water - after all we are paying charges to a water company - this means that you must be connected to a main s water disposal pipe - that includes the rainwater from the roof of a house - it will mean that a claim for your address can submitted- FIND out about it and invest one or many water butts ( Big ones at WICKES = £21 ) a system that fit on the side of the house prove that you are a water eco-warrior is available .
I am open to correction and welcome further info- about re-use of water .
  • I find it staggering that, in this day and age, we actually have people who are thinking of penny-pinching by saving water. We live on an island! It always rains here! We are surrounded by the stuff!! OK, sea water is salty, but it's not as if we live in the Sahara or something.

I really think you would do better to save money via other methods. Sure, have a shower instead of a bath, wash the car with a bucket instead of a hose, and use a rain butt for the garden. But really... there are better ways of saving money. For instance, try turning off your immersion heater/boiler and see if you can get away with using cold water only. I find that I now rarely need to use the hot tap for anything other than a luke warm shower on the coldest of days. Just use common sense. :T

Try it with a plastic bottle filled with water (that way you can control the level by the size of the bottle) as you may find that, depending on the size of the toilet tank, a brick doesn't leave enough water in there to have the power to clear no2s successfully. My ball c0ck was adjustable so I just turned it down slightly instead so the water was about 2" lower.
After reading your post, I thought about doing this so grabbed an empty bottle from the recycling bin and filled it with water. Lifted the lid off the cistern and its already full! There are two 500ml bottles plus three small takeaway food containers. The previous residents must have had the same idea as me!
  • If you put stuff in your cistern you might save a litre or two when you take a pee but come when you need to flush more, oops its run out of water. You then have to flush a second time, loosing your previous water savings. They are all rubbish, they just make you think you are saving water.

I bought an interflush kit, now I just flush only whats needed, just hold the handle down until its clear, then let go to stop. Dead simple, saved loads of money.
