hi all:coffee:
we're having a lunch box crisis here with my dd who's nearly 7.
she has suddenly stopped atng lunch at school, apparently because all her friends eat theirs much more quickly than her, so she doesn't want to be left alone...
however...
it does take her longer to eat as she has hm w/meal bread sandwiches, fresh fruit and veg in her box, whereas I strongly suspect her friends have white plastic bread/roll filled with processed meat/cheese, a choc bar and a cheese string.
I have tried some variants; Ie.. crackers etc but I am starting to get stuck...does anyone have some ides to get her to eat either food ideas or ways of making her understand her lunch is great the way it is.
Has anyone else experienced this or similar? Is it just a phase? I don't want her to be victimised for being different, but there is no way I will put rubbish in her box...
HEEELLLLPPPPP!!
thanks

I used to do some little bags of raisins (about the same amount as those horrendously expensive little boxes sold in the supermarkets).
You could also make up small tubs of couscous (mixed with stock made with veggie boullion and dried corriander and allowed to cool - it's delicious). My daughter likes this mixed with some dip (natural yoghurt and philly type cheese). Very quick and easy to eat.Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -
My daughter (9) has a packed lunch and she has pretty much the same thing everyday. She has a sandwich (with wholemeal bread) or crackers, for protien she has ham, chicken, cheese or tuna, a small yoghurt, a little tub of grapes or some cut up apple, water, a few pistachio nuts and a small portion of chocolate (probably a 1/3 or 1/4 of a standard choc bar). She also has a portion of fruit at breaktime.
She understands that she is not to eat the chocolate until she has eaten the majority of her lunch box and she sticks to this rule because I threaten to take away her treat if she doesn't! Most days she eats everything in there. Her diet is generally really good, she doesn't eat processed food and she doesn't like most puddings so she only eats her main meal in the evening, so as I treat she has a buscuit or sweets.
I don't think there is anything wrong with putting a small treat in there for your daughter if the rest of her lunch is fresh food - I know exactly what you are saying about the cheese strings. Her nan gives them to her and I hate them, they don't even taste of cheese!
EDIT; forgot about the raisins, she loved them and had them everyday for about 3 months. Then she went off them and went onto grapes. They do go through phases and it's just finding different options that they will eat. We’ve had to remove your signature. hiya!!! my dd (whos 8 n has the appetite of a sparrow) is on pack ups but luckily so are her friends.... her lunchbox inventory is...
1/2 pitta bread stuffed with any of the following... ham, chicken, cheese, tuna
a packet of crisps
a piece of fruit,
flapjack or cereal bar
small tub of natural yogurt with either jam, chocolate cornflakes or chopped up fruit
chunk of cheese(if not in pitta)
she has a good go at eating it!:D:Ddoes my bum look big in this sig?0 -
carrie.
my dd also likes a half pitta, but then she sometimes eats it often not. she never finishes if she has crisps, so i stopped those.
thanks . :T
I just feel a bit like tearing my hair out as I'm worried her energ levels drop in the afternoon lessons because of her lack of eating lunch0 -
Yeah, phases... doncha just love the little darlings?
Anyway - it's going to be mostly a case of finding things that are either quick and easy to eat (yet nutritious, of course) or finding things that are so delicious she really wnats to eat them all up - even if she nibbles on them back out in the playground.
To that end we have a lot of sandwich and lunch threads around the place which are well worth a browse, and I'm sure at least one of them will catch your eye:-

I had the same problem over speed, with my son. So instead of keeping things separate, I bunged everything in a pitta - once that's eaten, its (pretty much) all gone! So he got a ham and salad, cheese and salad, cream cheese with shredded carrot, cucumber and celery. In fact, he started a trend because it looked so nice the other kids fancied what he'd got and now they're starting to bring them in as well.
I made his fruit portable (so he could take it with him out to play) or quick to eat (like a Kiwi already prepared in a little pot) and made sure everything else was small.
Today, he's got a cold sausage pitta with shredded cucumber and mayo instead of butter or spread, three cherry tomatoes, a piece of Edam, a little pot of Twiglets and a pot of home made fruit yoghurt (which the other kids lust over, too! lol). Shouldn't take him long to dispose of that little lot!:hello: I'm very well, considering the state I'm in. :hello:Weight loss since 2 March 10 : 13lbs0 -
thanks again guys.
like the idea of fitting some different veg into the pitta bread paws, def try that, thanks...
Just gotta keep sloggin' i guess.0 -
You could bake some little pizza pockets, kinda like mini calzone pizzas, that would go down well. These don't have to be italian either, you could easily fill them with meat and veg like a pasty. Bake enough on a Sunday and they should last you the whole week.
Anything she can eat with her fingers, they're faster than messing about with a knife and fork.0 -
i like the pizzas idea...in fact, just remembered i promised the kids pizza for dinner....
off to the bread machine for me!
