For various reasons, I need to reduce my outgoings, including my grocery bill.
I am using my breadmaker, my slow cooker and when I am feeling brave, my pressure cooker to cook all our meals from scratch.
I am using a menu plan for the week, buying my fruit and veg at the market and shop mostly in Tesco or Asda.
I have also been to my nearest Lidl a couple of times, but I found it really difficult to shop there, as so many of the products were labelled in German and I didn't have a clue what they were!
So all you moneysavers out there, what would you recommend that is good value to buy in Lidl?
Apologises if anything similar has been posted on here - I did do a quick search before posting, but couldn't find anything.
Thanks!

I did a little test once. Every time I do a major shop I spend £40. Then I see how long that £40 worth of shopping lasts. When I shopped in Lidl's it only lasted a couple of weeks. Their stuff is cheap but they don't do any BOGOF's. The best things in there are their fruit and veg which I must admit is good value. I've 'tested' all the supermarkets in this way and I've found the best place to go for a big shop is Iceland. £40 of shopping from there lasts about 6 weeks. The worst place is obviously M&S.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I agree about the BOGOF's but I have reduced my food bill by half so can't exactly complain!
Well, it's all down to personal preference. Out of what I regularly buy, most things are good value but the best to me are the jar of stuffed olives for 55p, the two-packs of decent large frozen pizzas for about £1.50, the pack of four big porkchops (they dont shrink on cooking) for £3.30-ish, litre of orange juice for 39p and giant tins of carrots or sweetcorn for 19p.
The fruit and veg is on half price at least two-thirds of the time as well.

Hi
I only buy a few definite items from Lidls on a regular basis. These are:
smoked ham (8 slices and lovely) 89p
creamy coleslaw (yummy on spud with cheese) 55p
jams (blueberry-delish) 49p
mozarella (HM pizza-enough for 2 big ones)49p
fruit & veg (normally half price)
breaded haddock/cod (6 pieces & great quality) 1.89
parsley sauce sachet-18p
cheddar cheese sauce sachet-18p
mint sauce-21p
mayo (creamy & large jar) 47p
cheddar (750g huge) 1.75
milk (2 pints) cant remember the price..lol
ice cream (delish and only bought as a treat) 1.50
We are fortunate that we have a Lidls near us. Normally when OH goes there he buys double of everything we need and freeze including milk, ham mozarella etc as its more convienant and saves time etc. Most items we have tried have been of great quality, but am still a wimp when it comes to trying new things. The ham is great quality though.
I may try some new things too but will see what other people recomend.

If you want to know what any of the german labels say, let me know and I can translate. Aldi's too are very good (I prefer these to Lidl) - their Bratwursts (big sausages) are great value grilled with mash and gravy for dinner.0

I didn't like the black pudding from there. Yuk.
Love the Jams and chocolate spread. Chocolate milkshake for No2 son. Veg is good. Premium cornbeef, orange juice, lemonade, etc
Some of the items are so cheap you can afford to try and not waste too much money. We all have different tastes. I know someone that will still only eat Heinz baked beans even with some good cheaper brands out there.

I always buy their wafer thin ham/turkey which is really nice, and only £1.99 for 400g. I buy their jams, which are lovely, and their ground coffee. Also buy teabags, cheese, salad, some fruit and veg, yoghurts and I bought a chiecken last week which was really nice. Oh, and if you like Boddingtons Bitter  it is only £2.79 for four and I often but my wine there too. And I am quite happy with their baked beans, but as has been mentioned, some people are very picky about their beans! They have part-baked ciabatta bread which is nice and they have frozen giant prawns which are delicious and only £2.59 in my local store at the moment.0

The farmhouse sliced bread is good and tasty. The chocolate cakes.. one is round with icing on top and the loaf marble cake are very nice.
Butter beans, tomato puree all good. Their chocolate very nice especially the choc covered raisinsand the large coffee choc bar.
Cottage cheese and yogourts good especially the passion fruit ones.
Roasted ham in big slices very tasty.
On the radio I heard a panel of tasters talking about Lidl scotch eggs and they came top. Their coleslaw 49p for a big tub very tasty.
Bottles of orange juice (like a milk bottle) 49p and very refreshing. Their gin @ £6.29 for 70cl is great value. All the wines we've tasted have been good.
I sound like an old boozer!
At Christmas their mince pies are great. Tasty pastry and good filling.
I find most of their food is good value and good ingredients.
Although it shows several different languages on the packs there is always an English translation too.0 -
Never eaten so healthily since I found the 'almost all the time' half price fruit and veg at Lidl.
Bought tined kidney beans for 13p last week-thats cheap-I think-and a kidney bean is a kidney bean so to speak!!:j0 -

I have to agree with you there! The best ever black pudding I've tasted (had some this morning actually!) is from Jimmy's Farm and is called Stornaway pudding and was only a couple of quid for a huge piece!
It's a long while since I've had chance to shop at Lidls but I'd agree with other's who have mentioned their Black Forest hams and cheeses etc as well as a whole range of products! I really miss being able t shop there!
They also have a money back guarantee that if you don't like anything they'll refund you too (or at least they used to have) so you can't lose really!
Oh, and those German biscuits (choccie sandwich ones) are to die for
This time of year, nearing xmas, they have some excellent products for sale, some of which you wouldn't find in UK supermarkets"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"
