    Hi
Can some one suggest where to buy a good value for money mattress?
Have so far looked at John Lewis and Dreams.
    I'm looking to spend 300-400quid.
    Much appreciated.
    Tom

Hi There, a good one to try is IKEA, they have a good range of mattress's in that price range. All mattresses have a 10 year guarantee and you can get spinal checks this weekend in most stores and also the Love it or Exchange it policy is also really good, you purchase the mattress try it for 30-90 days and should you not like it you can exchange for another to the same value.
:money: giving me & my darling boys a better cheaper life :o:A

Sorry, to clarify what I meant by "memory foam" being treated as a generic term is that many people think the actual mattresses are all the same...as witnessed by them being knocked out on home shopping channels all the time just because they are memory foam. Although the material is what is meant by memory foam people don't realise there are different thicknesses and densities giving different characteristics.

I guess I was lucky as the salesman I got was a bit of a mattress geek :) He didn't push us to buy the most expensive and in fact steered us away from the expensive ones that made you sink in too much.

You were very lucky finding a salesman like that.

If you search on MSE you will find that the general opinion is that the quality in Ikeas mattresses is terrible.

Also their sizes are continental, not UK.

Im just curious, companies that take back the mattress if you dont like it - what do they do with them?

Do they resell them as used?

That would depend on the company. We auction them on ebay as tried out and returned items.
  • Have seen this 'Sleepezee Pocketsense Serene foam Mattress, Soft comfort' at Sleeping Solutions. The king size is £239.00 with 20% cashback through quidco making it £191.20. Any good?

This mattress contains the reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs that I have warned against on a number of occasions. They are much smaller than the full size steel pocket springs, and I have seen them made from plastic, or even barrell shaped reflex foam.

This type of mattress can also be very hot, as the air can't circulate through it.

You do know that this mattress doesn't contain any memory foam don't you?

I would never pay that much for what is basically a cheap reflex foam mattress.

Thanks to you all for the time taken to respond to my post.
I would have never thought that buying a new mattress could be such a headache.

Will look at suggested websites, btw I'm looking for a pocket spring mattress.
    Thanks again, much appreciated.

i didn't realise what a performance & headache it would be either when i started looking a few weeks ago!

my 2000 pocket sprung Millbrook Jupiter kingsize from sleeping solutions is being delivered later today, it was ordered online 28.9.09 (via Quidco with 20% cashback already validated).

    happy hunting!

You wouldn't believe the sales hype that some reps give in bed shops. One of the things that they will try and tell you is 'the more pocket springs in a mattress the better'.

Well to be honest this isn't true. 800 springs in a king size mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. If a mattress has too many springs (I have seen 3000 in a king size mattress), then the springs have to be made so small and weak that they can easily be damaged.

I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 in a king size mattress.
  • We have been considering John Lewis Natural Pocket 2 actually tried in the shop, £375 for a double.
    Still looking around though!
