Food does not have to go into the slow cooker hot. Precooking would be a pain. However, what it does say, is that where possible, throw in some hot stock to start it off. Your cooking liquid is better going in warmed. So if I'm doing a stew I prepare all the veg the night before, then on the morning I bung it in, chop the meat in and pour over a couple of stock cubes dissolved in boiling water.
My veg and meat don't go in hot.Wendy x0 -
would never have thought of cooking overnight and then put it in freezer. great idea as i have my fits and starts when cooking so would be nice to make 2 dinners and freeze one.. had a disaster 20 years ago when i spent weekend cooking and freezing stuff as when i reheated stuff it all turned into a tasteless mush or was no gravy left so never tried it again. whats the best way of doing it?
My preferred method is to leave it to thaw in the fridge overnight. If you are using any cream or thickening in your preparation, freeze it without and add that after reheating. Some things reheat better than others, and soups and stews are better gently reheated on the hob than blasted in the microwave. Rice dishes reheat better in the microwave."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -

remember seeing nigella doing something similar, how does it turn out and can u give details please?
Yeah, I got the idea from Nigella. You can use ginger ale, lemonade, coke but it shouldnt be the diet version.
I cover the gammon with the coke and leave all day and thats it.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
has anyone got a recipe for baked beans in the slow cooker?
Thought I'd cook up some haricot beans with some sausages (as we are snowed in and have run out of Heinz!!!)
I have soaked my haricots, about to boil them off for ten minutes ...
Want to make it less sausage casserole and more bangers and beans ...
Thanks!That's Numberwang!0 -

Does anyone have any idea what I could use to cook two separate meals at the same time in my slow cooker?
I would only be cooking for 2 so although I know I could cook a meal in there and freeze half I wondered if I could cook two different things.
I am not sure what size it is, I know I can fit a 1.3kg chicken in there at a push.
I had the idea of putting two pyrex jugs in there with say some turkey thigh meat in one with one sauce and a different one in the other but don't know if that would work or not.
Well, I gave it a try last night and it worked!
I bought a pack of diced turkey thigh from Tesco for £2 (normal price), cut into smaller pieces and divided into 2 portions.
Placed one lot into the pyrex jug and covered with a medium sized jar of cheap Uncle Bens sauce Texan Pepper Sauce (25p B&M), mixed the other portion with a tin of chopped toms with herbs and added a jar of Knorr Stir it Up (10p B&M).
I placed the jug in the middle of the slow cooker pot and put the other ingredients around it, left to cook on low for 6 hours.
This morning I placed one lot in the fridge for tonight and the other in a plastic tub into the freezer.
So, two meals cooked at the same time and I only need to boil some rice or pasta for each dish and that it that, done!
Next time I think I will divide the thigh meat into 3 portions as there is still quite a bit of meat there for the 2 of us.0 -

i tried mince which ended up in big clumps - think i need to brown it first next time.
i also tried lamb hotpot. i used a colemans sachet and it didn't taste as good as when i make it in the oven .
i am going to give it one more go and see if i can crack it!!
Yes, definitely brown the mince first.
You should also use less water in your slow cooker than traditional cooking - maybe this made it taste different?0 -
Regarding cooking more than one thing in the slow cooker.
Does anyone wrap portions of chicken etc in foil and cook it that way?
I like to cook chicken breasts in the S/C without any extra ingredients, just a bit of water as my daughter likes chicken sandwiches for school lunch. I know chicken breast for kids sandwiches may sound a bit extravagent but a decent sized breast is about £1 and they don't really shrink much if cooked int the sc so go a long way when cooled and sliced.
I thought I might wrap a few things and cook at the same time ie one chicken breast, a pork loin (woopsie of course) and a small piece of gammon.
If well wrapped so they don't let any juices esape I would think I can cook enough for at least 6 meals at the same time.0 -

i know this is a slow cooker thread & not a bread thread, but where did you find the recipe for the beer and mustard bread? i've tried cheese and onion bread with mustard powder, which is tasty, but yours sounds fab!!Mortgage free as of 11/11/15 !
