Firefox / Opera vs IE

Seems as though Internet Explorer is getting a bad press re security issues so I'm thinking of changing but I'm a bit wary (especially with "free" products) of jumping from frying pan to fire.
Seems with Opera there's two versions: a free version with ads or a pay-for version without.
Any 'catch' with Firefox? Will I get loads of ads, etc?
Also, if I downlaod Firefox or Opera, what do i do with IE? Do I need to remove it (is that possible??) or do I just leave it?
Thanks for any info / advice.

Go for it. Firefox has no ads, no pop-ups, you can add various extensions (mini-programs) to add whatever functionality you want. any security problems and they are fixed almost before they are found. Its got tabbed browsing if thats what you like. Opera also does all of this(I think) but with the ads on the free version. You must keep IE as its integrated into XP but can be useful once a week to check on updates.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
The best thing to do is just try them - Firefox users tend to love it and could ramble about the pros for ages
I hesitated a long time before changing my browser because I thought it was a really big deal - that it would mean some sort of system-wide change - it doesn't. You can install it in seconds and remove it in seconds
You can just download firefox then use it when you like - you can leave IE as your default while you test firefox.
The downside with firefox is that some pages will not work properly. Apart from the huge increase in speed, the great thing a about firefox is all the extensions you can use which take seconds to plug in.
The following plugins I can't live without anymore:
ieview gives you the option in the right-click menu to "view this page in IE" which is useful when you come across pages that don't work
foxytunes puts little buttons at the bottom of the browser so you can control music without launcing a player
imagezoom zoom in on any image on a page by using the scroll wheel - great for ebay0 -
If you visit many sites that require compulsary registration (where you have to register for free to gain access to information for the only reason that the site operator gets access to your personal info.) then the BugMeNot plugin for Firefox is a godsend.

Just right-click on the login and click bugmenot. You will then be logged in.Alex Jones0 -
Hey, thanks guys! Feel much better about it now.
Jut moving on slightly - Alex, you got me worried. Loadsa sites require compulsory registration (like, this one?), so what personal info can the site master get and, er, what can s/he do with it?? Hey, you're getting me worried here (well, not HERE, but in general).
Anyone out there got anything negative to say about Firefox or Opera, or are they really that good?0 -
I procrastinated for months before switching to Firefox, thinking it would require work and there'd be a learning curve, but as stated above, it downlaods and installs quickly, imports your settings and favourites from IE and you start using it instantly. I've beeen using it for months and I love it. There is no downside. Tabbed browsing is just right - everyone should do it.
For the (very few) sites which don't work properly in Firefox, with the ieview plug-in, you just right-click and launch it in an IE window. It's that simple. I've only come across one site so far which is an issue (a banking site) but it even it functions 95% properly. BTW, everyone should contact the site-administrator when their site doesn't work properly in Firefox or Opera, so they get a chance to fix it.There's love in this world for everyone. More thanks due!
Clicked on the 'see here' link above - don't seem to be many problems with Firefox, just about the number of people raving about it!
Sorry for re-opening a topic already covered - SOOOOO much to read, so little time.0 -
Thanks for the link - very amusing (and true!)
Noticed there's an article about 'registry' so am definitley going to read that - so many forums assume you know how to edit your registry, post a log, etc.0 -
