Unrelated or not, if you do not disclose that may void your whole policy, obviously I cannot speak for your (or any) insurers, but as a guide atheletes foot, and what I would call "everyday medical conditions" are usually excused unless it is due to other condition. Basically if you may need hospital or doctor treatment then this is what you MUST disclose - and each insurer will excuse conditions after a while of non-treatment.

To protect yourself, call the insurance company and ask them if you have any medical condition.

Columbus Direct is a broker you would be insured with Professional Travel Insurance Company Limited and to be honest I have never had any dealings with them ever.

Marks & Spencer is AXA - if you ask me don't touch it - too many "unfair clauses" and they will do everything they can to avoid paying your claim - I have claims on my desk datng back to 1998 that they have not settled and have just ignored - and these patients now are (at least) on the credit reporting agencies as bad debtors.

AIG & Direct are as good as any insurer, by far not the worse but not the very best either - I have an excellent relationsip with their UK assistance company.

If I was travelling on hols like you guys from the UK - I would buy (in order of preference)
    Tesco
    Post Office
    Norwich Union (Aviva)
    Barclays Bank

Yes - if in doubt, tell the insurance company as much as possible - they are the ones who will decide if you are too much of a risk for their basic policy and let you know your alternatives - Too many people fall foul of the "I did not think I had to mention that" after their claim has beed denied and they are left with a huge bill.

    Equityman,

The big question springs to mind - Was your wife DIAGNOSED with gallstones or gallbladder problem befor you travelled - there is a great deal of difference between a stomach ache and gallstones.

Also as you refused treatment in Florida that may have been where you went wrong. If you go to the hospital and then leave AMA (Against Medical Advice) or just leave without the doctor discharging you - then guess what - you just voided your policy. Plus if you did discharge AMA and your airline find out they will refuse to board you on the plane in case you are taken ill in mid air.

Please note that although it is not very reasonable in your view, your wife was the patient and claimant therefore many insurers will not cover YOUR hotel/food/taxi and other expences while your wife is in the hospital.

Did you call your insurers as early as possible? - They would then give you instructions as to where to go and what they will cover and will not cover and often arrange with the hospital for direct billing.

    FH Brit,

Wanted to say thanks for a phenomenal thread! We've been to Florida 30+ times and still find buying insurance daunting, if not a black art. I think I shall take a trip to the docs and ask them if I have any pre-existing conditions because I'm not aware of any and from the sound of other posts I don't want to fall foul!

Your point about dental cover. My husband lost a filling, it cost us about $500 to get a new one! Thankfully we had Denplan's overseas cover (phew!).

A question if I may - you talked about the walk in centers. Are there any that you think are better than others? Thanks!

Walk-in Centers (Centres) [typical Americans can't spell! - only joking]

I work for Florida Hospital so the best by far is Florida Hospital CentraCare!

and honestly as my insurance is with FH that's the only place I have ever been. Sorry can't help further. But bear in mind FH are the biggest healthcare provider in Florida (7 Hospitals & 14 CentraCare's) in/around Orlando, so many UK insurers are already contracted with us, therfore fewer problems with your insurance (hopefully).

***** ALL ***** Please note I will not be answering for the next 2 days or so - Tropical Storm/Hurricaine Fay is comming and our offices are closing so we are all going to take cover/precautions.

Stay safe FHBrit... Noticed from NOAA that Orange County is under tornado watch, I hate those... Hopefully Fay will just come through as a tropical storm, though that's bad enough. Good luck!!!
