Farm Shop shopping

It was my first visit to a farm shop yesterday , I told my Mum the prices I paid and she thinks I was ripped off, but she buys very cheap (but fatty) stuff from the Market in Town. I paid £4.40/kg for Stew beef (which was steak cut up- I saw him taking it and cutting it up), Diced Pork was £3.30/KG and I got a Brisket for £4.84/kg. Sadly I couldn't see the cheaper cuts that you all reccommend (Loin and shoulder) and I was too shy to ask
Next question- what do I do with the diced pork? LOL I bought it but had no idea what I would use it for oops!
Thank you!
Tracy

Sweet and sour pork?
Pork casserole?0 -
It might cost a little more, but the quality is much better and don’t be shy, ask for what you want

I work in 'old money', so that's £1.99 lb for stewing beef, £1.49 lb for diced pork and £2.19 lb for the brisket. I would say that was definitely cheap
Did your mum realise the prices you quoted were per kg ? Maybe she thought it was for a lb in which case that would have been a lot.
I'd make a casserole with the pork. I'd add something sweet to it like apricots, or apple. The sweet and sour idea is a good one too.0 -
thriftlady.... the pork casserole with the apricots sounds really nice. and i bought tinned apricots yesterday to go in my peach crumble.....
so could you tell use how to make it please..
thank you...:wave:Work to live= not live to work0 -

thank you...
Toss the meat in seasoned flour and brown in some oil in a casserole. Take the meat out and brown a chopped onion and garlic if you like. Add any spices you like at this stage - coriander would be nice with the apricots as it has quite a fruity flavour.
Put the meat back in the casserole with the onions and add some sort of liquid - take your pick from;a tin of tomatoes, stock, alcohol (cider is nice with pork) or use some fruit juice like apple( with water otherwise it will be too sweet).
Next add other veg such as carrots, peppers, mushrooms and your apricots. You might not want the whole can and use the ones in juice not syrupor use dried apricots.
Make sure the liquid is just covering the meat and veg (add more water if necessary). Bring to the boil, reduce to a simmer and put in the oven at about 150 -160 for a couple of hours.
Taste and add salt and pepper if you want.

thoses prices sound fantastic to me. if i knew i was getting quality meat then it wouldn't bother me paying a little bit extra, and also supporting local suppliers.
i always ask what the price is £ for lb as i just can't work out if it is a good deal by the kg. maths was never a strong point for me, but i find butchers etc are always happy to help out with this.0 -
As a rough guide a kg is a bit more than twice as much as a lb. So halve the cost per kg and expect it to come in a bit less than that.
1 lb = 454g
2 lb =908 g0 -
thank you thriftlady.. for the that......sorry for asking but your pork caserole,, sounded so yummy and mouth watering.....and we all know your a good cook:DWork to live= not live to work0
