It's basically when you don;t use nappies, but instead potty train from birth.
The theory, which I happen to subscribe to, is that just like babies know when they're hungry, they also know when they want to go to the toilet.
The idea of EC is that you learn their facial expressions, noises, etc., to knwo when they need it, and hold them over a bowl making a cue noise such as 'pssss'. You also do it by timing as newborns apparently need hte loo 20 mins after eating, or something like that.
Obviously, you also do miss some and it takes time, but you can use nappies a bit if you want, say overnight or on journeys, and ultimately it means you don;t have to do toilet training later on.
There are Yahoo groups and forums for it and I know it's pretty way out but then I seem to be pretty way out and hippyish with all my baby stuff and I'm keen to find out more and give it a go.
I found a few websites on it, mostly American, and they reckon you can do it a bit even if you work, but I will be at home full-time so reckon I can give it a fair crack and see if I can work it, although I plan to have nappies at home as well.
I can post some links if anyone is interested, but I appreciate it's probably a bit of a niche activity!

skint - I've heard of that before...something also about not putting any bottoms on the kid when they're in the house, as they will be loath to soil things if they don't have bottoms on? I guess it's like baby-led weaning, except this is baby-led weeing! I would be interested, if I could convince OH...he tends to shy away from 'weird' stuff like this :Ptop 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne

it's very common in other cultures around the world, and feels, to me, much more natural than using nappies, although not as convenient obviously.
this was the search I did http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLR_enGB312&q=elimination+communication%2c+aka+infant+potty+training+aka+natural+infant+ and there are lots of interesting links from that you can read.
My OH seems to trust me implicitly in all things baby so we're going to have a go at it (well, I am!).
You can still put bottoms on them I think, although some people don't, it's more about learning their cues, and I'm sure most mums know when their baby wants to loo anyway - how many times have you heard someone say 'oh, he's about to do a poo'? It's only taking that and making sure you hold the baby over a pot instead of watching them poo in their nappy.

No skintchick, not you, sorry but you really cheered me up. I just cannot imagine with coping with everything else that you have to do with a newborn and the tiredness and hormones, who on earth came up with the idea. The amount of time it takes to wean, potty train etc is huge. Just sometimes we can make things more complicated for ourselves. I for one will be using my time to enjoy cuddles, walks, talking to my bubs because before you know it she'll be a toddler. I'm really sorry if I offended you!Too many children, too little time!!!0

I really like the idea of EC, but I think I'd prefer to start it a bit later on, around 6 months or so rather than immediately. I'm a bit worried that there'll be so much to learn and to adjust to, having a new baby (a first baby) and feeding and other cues, that I'd make a lot of mistakes and everything we own would end up covered in baby poop. Once we're a bit settled into a routine I'd like to try it.
Thanks, skintchick, that's really interesting. What else are you doing that's far out and hippyish?Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

I did a bit of reading about EC Skintchick. I found it really fascinating that babies could be fully trained at around 1YO. I did mention trying it to DH, but he laughed and said it may affect our ability to get babysitters for nights out and stuff, as it would only be us who would read the signals right. I would be very interested in hearing how you get on with it. Its not something I have ruled out completely.
Aless, I would strongly recommend no housework at all today its really not worth the risk. Please try to take it easy.
Jillie, I think 3 bottles should be enough. I had 4 small bottles for starters and that was plenty for expressed milk.0 -

It's supposed to be easier if you do it before six months although I'm not totally sure why.
i guess i think that if I start like that it won't feel like hard work especially, and I know it may be easier to use nappies but I don;t want to make my parenting choices based on what is easy for me.
What else? Well, I'm still seriously considering a Lotus birth, where you don't cut the cord at all and instead carry the placenta around with you until it drops off naturally, as well as my home birth, hopes to not use any drugs at all (not gas and air), baby-wearing, and generally being a hippy earth mother! DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

but you have to potty train at some point - why not do it earlier rather than later? THat's my thinking on it.
The idea wasn't created, it is what people have done naturally for centuries, and still do in many cultures. It's nappies that are weird, in that sense, and a created idea. (Backed up by the lucrative nappy industry who encourage us to use them and present them as the only option, similar to the formula food industry.)
Of course, every mum chooses for herself what she wants to do, but EC isn;t a new idea by any means, it's an ancient one.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
