Giving up fizzy drinks?

Options
Hi

I have a embrassing addiction; Diet coke & hubby is just as bad with diet lemonade. Between us we must get through a litre a day:o:o although lately I have been watering it down by about 1/4.

Any adivce on stopping? Is it better to go cold turkey or will we be more successful in the long term if we do it gradually?

We have always reasoned that we don't have any other vices so this was OK but I don't want our 1 year old to start joining in & we must obviously lead by example!

Thanks:o

Don't really drink a lot of pop...in fact we only tend to have the odd bottle to treat ourselves every now and then. Can't honestly remember how we weaned ourselves off the stuff but realising how much we were spending in comparison to what we could get out of a large bottle of squash helped.

Be careful with young children & coke.....it sends my 2 year old nephew completely off his trolley (yes even more so than usual). He does occasionally have some flat lemonade, but he doesn't like any bubbles and he's only allowed it occasionally (usually a little treat from granny)

Hi Lillibet, Why not try just drinking water? Its the action of actually drinking something sometimes (a bit like smoking, having something to do with your hands) Could it be the caffeine that you are addicted to too? I gave up caffeinated coffee by just not having it for a few days and going onto decaff. After a few days I got used to it and felt better. Expect headaches through the cold turkey phase but it will be worth it.

Also you could put all the money saved in a jar and have a treat!

We went cold turkey with the coke and it was hell for abit but now we only have it as a mixer in spirits occasionally. For us there wasnt any choice DH's wages reduced by alot and we couldnt afford it anymore.

    Good luck

I used to buy 2 bottles of value cola and 2 of lemonade in my fortnightly tesco shop (which I no longer do...)
Alll I did was stop buying it.Don't even l.ike cola now, and I used to drink a few cans of diet coke in a week, but the money is better spent elsewhere!
The kids are better without it. Also they must be bad for you even the sugarfree ones because my diabetic mum has been told not to drink fizzy drinks, even sugar free, as they would mess with her sugar levels!

I used to love diet drinks but now try to have water with a slice of fresh lemon in it and ice cubes - sometimes with a bit of mint from the garden.

No advice as I've got the same addiction. It's not just the caffeine it's the fizzy drink as well which I'm addicted to. The other day I bought 8 x diet pepsi for £10.88 at LIDL but I've noticed that the mineral water is £1.50 for 6 bottles. So it's quite a difference.

Just stop buying it. I used to drink around 2-3ltrs a day of diet coke (my dentist had a fit when he heard! Though my teeth have always been in great condition!) and then I went to uni. I bought squash instead and since then have just moved onto plain filtered water.

I have it when I goto the pub when being DES. It's a bit like drinking beer now - a treat!

  • Hi, this may not be of any use, but here goes:

About two years ago I went to see the comic Mark Thomas in a local theatre. Part of his show was highlighting the aledged worldwide misconduct of the largest fizzy drinks maker (the one who used to want to teach the world to sing!) since then I have stopped drinking thier brands of fizzy drink and these days I rarely drink fizzy drinks at all.

The moral of my story is, sometimes a shock and cold turkey are the best way to go. Yes i sometimes have the odd craving for a cola and yes I have the odd one, but far better to have a can every few months than a large bottle daily.

Please note, this is not intended to be a political crusade, just a little insight into how one cola addict managed to give up.
  • I am the same, hubby keeps buying fizzy juice! i often go cold turkey and it works, im not too bad coming off juice, chocolate, well thats a different story:rotfl: i stopped this 2 days ago and i have had the worst headache ever! got through that:j

    Must keep my willpower:rotfl:
