Help to trace Dad.

I wondered if anyone could help my DH. He wants to trace his biological father. The only person who has any information about him is DH's mother who has not been that forth coming. All we have is his fathers full name and where he originated from. We also know that he was a PTI in the Navy and was likley to have been based in Malta in 1956/57. Not 100% on this though.

We have no idea where to or how to start on this one.

Any help would be greatley appreciated.

I'm tracing mine at the moment. I got his full name and rough age from my natural mother, then went to the Family Records Centre in London and found his birth date. Am waiting for his birth certificate to arrive, but in the meantime I went through the marriage register there and found out when and where he married, his wife's name, and any children. I then looked on the Electoral Roll until I found him, although I won't be contacting him.

I go to the FRC quite a bit - if you can't get there and the father was born in England/Scotland/Wales, I'd be happy to do some looking for you. PM me.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

I found my father through his brother ~ I found his brother in the telephone book! It helped that he had an unusual name and I started within the area that he came from. It did take a day or so.

You could try Look for Them which has the main organisations all in one place to help you trace missing persons, relatives or biological parents.

The website https://www.1837online.com is invaluable and will enable you to look through the records of births, marriages and deaths. Also, if you have his full name then try looking at the electoral roll, or even Directory enquiries. These services can cost a few pounds here and there and again when you send off for certificates that you want copies of.
Try to get a rough age if you can as it will reduce the amount you need to look through and therefore pay for.
We have just succeeded in finding someone this way and still have another to look for. I haven't yet tried to look at military records but worth a Google I would have thought.
    Good luck!

Check out the Genes Reunited website too, I have found a few (second/third)cousins on there I never knew I had! Even just posting his father's name MAY come up with something. Worth a try.

As Sandie said, genesreunited can be a great place to start... just search for the name you have and you can contact people with him in their tree. Alternatively, as you know his surname you can post on the "Trying to find" board they have.

I did this and managed to contact my mum's biological mum (unfortunately too late for both of them as they both died at 43 from cancer  ) but I now have 15 aunts and uncles and millions of cousins!!

Good luck in your search xx

You could use freebmd.com to look up births deaths and marriages, as it's free. If you want any look ups you can't find on there, please pm me and I'll do what I can as I subscribe to a number of family history sites. Genes Reunited might also find you something.
    Best of luck

    Hi Tag

I'm new to MSE so apologies if I'm breaking rules re this posting. :o

If he was in the navy in WW2 and got medals try https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ this is a searchable database of seamen. Also try http://cindyslist.com she has a huge military section with links to all sorts of sites which may help. These are both free sites.

Another pay site is http://ancestry.co.uk they have all the census' online.

Anyway hope this helps you :D

    Hi TAG.
    Good luck with your search.
I've been trying to find birth parents for many years. Found birth mother(doesn't want to know me). Still trying to trace father - difficult 'cos only have his surname. Have found a couple of 'cousins' though through 'roots chat' and 'genes reunited'. Will think of more info for you tomorrow - got a hefty 'Where Did I Come From?' file upstairs!
