Natural air freshners?

Was in tesco today and fancied getting some plug in air freshner, love the smell of mulled wine, but remembered last year i got really sore heads whenever i put them on.
What is the natural alternative, fancy something with a festive scent, what does everyone else use?

Something natural sounds much better than injecting chemicals into your room! Those air freshners give me sore throats and headaches! Pure Essential Oils (aromatherapy oils) can be added to an oil burner with a bit of water in to dilute and are gorgeous.
If you don't have a burner (or have nowhere safe to keep it away from children) just sprinkle some on a couple of tissues or some other fabric in the room. You can put the tissue on or near a radiator if you want some warmth to release a stronger smell. You can also buy a ring to put them in that fits onto a light bulb. Boots Botanics oils are good value for excellent quality oils but I'm sure many other makes are good. Just be sure to get pure essential oils not "room fragrance".
The cost of a bottle or a few bottles of oils will be comparable to buying plug in air freshners but thye will last you much longer with the added bonus that you can add a few drops to you bath when you relax once all the entertaining is over!
You can pick different oils depending on the mood you want to create. The boots ones say on the box/bottle what benefits they have. They also do some premixed ones (time to relax, time to unwind etc). Not sure of an exact "festive" scent but how about mandarin or Juniperberry (or perhaps - frankincense!!!)

This site has good quality oils (a good clue is if different oils have different prices because this shows that they don't dilute the expensive ones).
Cinnamon, cloves and francincense are all "Christmassy" smalls.
You could also try buying some cloves and sticking them into oranges to make pomanders.
For pot pourri, dried rose petals are often available quite cheaply from Asian grocers or homebrew shops. Orange peel (dried in a cooling oven) whole spices such as cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise etc can be added for a seasonal scent, nuts or small pine cones painted gold or silver make it look special.0 -
You can also cut a cheap sponge up into pieces, put a piece in a small dish, add a few drops of oil and pour boiling water onto it. (just a splash) The smell lasts for ages and when it dries up, you refresh it by adding more water to re-activate the oil. Used to do this to deter flies in the summer using lavender oil and it worked a treat.

I have a gorgeous candle which one of my brothers gave me for christmas last year - yankee candle company, so not that cheap, but so nice - and they last ages! Its a 'brown sugar and spice' one. I also have a 'baby powder' one that I've had for ages. I know you can get lots of christmas scents with them too.0

I love nice Crimbo smells too and use a really heavy duty metal burner that I bought in a sale at the Body Shop (I found that the cheap burners went rusty and the ceramic ones crack if they boil dry). My favorite oils to burn at this time of year are tangerine and clove mixed together. Yummy!0

I'll have to remember this and give it a try next summer. I hate flies in the kitchen but I hate using a fly spray (chemicals in the air- hate air fresheners for the same reason). Didn't know about lavender being a fly deterrent. Citronella is supposed to be good for this too.0 -
One thing I do all winter long is hang washing out if I can, especially sheets. They may not dry but when you bring them in and put them on a radiator the house smells so fresh! The laundry does too, of course! Also, a nice smelling fabric conditioner adds to this smell too. You can't beat that smell of freshness.0
