My 7 & a half year old cat - Ted died tonight.
He just keeled over & he breathed 3 gasps while I was trying to revive him.
We raced him to the emergency night vet, but we were too late. He had died in the living room. He was already dead when we left the house.
I was going to bring him home with me, I was in such shock i didn't know what to do, but I left him with the vets tonight, I don't want to remember him like that, I want to remember him as he was.
The vet vet did try to revive him with adrenalin & stuff, but it was too late. He says its hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (I just googled it now from what the vet described, I couldn't take in most of what he said tonight in the surgery) which is a genetic heart problem, common in male persians & causes sudden heart failure.
We are unsure if we are going to bury him in the garden or have him cremated, but if hes to be cremated I would want him done alone. Don't want a cremation with other animals for him anyway, I know that.
So I have to decide tomorrow really. Would be nice to dig his grave & bury him ourselves, but if we move I wouldn't want to leave him.
To be honest, Its still not real for me.
RIP Ted xxxxxx
EDITED to add the cremation fees (I wouldn't want to worry any other pet owners that its terribly high).
The crematirium do collect from the vets if you want, but we wanted to collect him ourselves & bring him there, so we did that as a family this afternoon.
They have a little room for saying goodbye & a little service. Just a taped few words & some soft music so you can say what you want & they printed two little personalised service books & cut a lock of his hair & put it in a little pouch for us.
The price was £115 for the cremation & £35 for the little hollow wooden cat for his ashes, so £150 for everything. Which I think was really reasonable.
It was a lovely service & I'm so looking forward to bringing him home tomorrow.
I will plant something in the garden for him in the spring, something to grow & live on.

I'm so sorry Mrs E.
My dog died about 6 weeks ago and we had him cremated. He was a large dog and it cost about £150. Alot of money but worth every penny as I'm not ready to let go of him just yet and this way he can stay with me for a bit. He's sat here with me now.
Someone posted this poem when Woofer died so thought I'd post it here aswell. I know it's a bit of a cliche but it does get easier with time.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

i am so sorry to hear of your tragedy tonight - you must be devastated.
not sure where you live but i paid around £120 to have my cat individually cremated - i attended the cremation too so that bumped up the cost from around the £70 mark. are you sure it is £400? my rabbit was only £70 when he was cremated.
not sure where you live but i used the Cambridge Pet Crematorium - they serve North London (where I live) and I assume everything in between here and there. they have a lovely Garden of Rememberance and the Pet Cemetary is beautifully tended.
try googling for your local pet crematorium, they are very sympathetic and can advise you and talk to you about everything, they are usually very helpful - they deal with upset pet owners daily so will completely understand how you feel. you can also usually organise the cremation directly with the crematorium if your vet is charging too much.
good luck x
here's a poem i would like to share with you
I was chosen to day
I'm learning to fly
the world took me away,
but please don't you cry.
And I chose you today
to try and be strong
so please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone.
When you're feeling alone
just remember our love,
I'm up near the stars
looking down from above.
Remember our love
in a moment you'll see
that I'm still here beside you
When you're thinking of me.0 -
I'm sorry. That's just terrible - 6 years is still a young cat. At least he did not suffer through a prolonged illness.0

So sorry for your loose. I lost my little boy in July and still not gone over it properly. I got another cat now 2 year old (tabby) from RSPCA. He is such a lively thing.
Anyhow best wishes at this difficult time, 6 is too young for a cat to die.0 -
Sorry to read of your loss, others have said it better than I, so here's a (dodgy) hug :grouphug: from opp north.Mortgage Owed: Sept 14 - £107398.200

Very sorry to hear that. We lost our rabbit about two years ago now. He was fine running around in the garden then he seemed to go all floppy. Had to put him to sleep, two hours later. I held him though, because the medication wasn't working.
It's such a dreadful empty feeling, like your heart is breaking.
We had him cremated at a lovely pet cemetary and brought him home.
If you have him cremated you could buy a beautiful rosebush for your garden and sprinkle his ashes there. In a strange way he would live on as well as in your memories. And if you did move you can always take the bush with you.
Good luck with your decision.

Sorry to hear of your loss
Whatever your decision with regards to cremation/burial, it will the right one. You know what is best for your own pet and Ted will know he was loved and cared for and maybe looking down now with great happiness as to what a good life you gave him.0 -
Very sorry to hear about you cat.
The cremation charges sound incredibly high. We have had to have both our dogs put to sleep in the past 2 years, both were large dogs and, including the vets costs, it was less than £200 for each of them. This included the return of the ashes in a beautiful box. This was with Leyland Pet Crematorium.

Hello MrsE
I'm sorry to hear about Ted, what a shock for you. I've been through losing darling kitties and know just how horrible and painful it is.
Regards the cremation the figure you were quoted does sound too high. While I can't remember actual figures for my cats I'm sure I never paid MORE than £100 for individual cremation including return of ashes. Definitely query the figure your husband thinks he saw, it really does sound excessive.
Wishing you all the best.
Snowy

Thank you all for your kind words.
I can't read that poem through yet, but I will do one day.
