    thanks for the warning!
  • have you done research into this to check that this is all correct???

In summary, how to tell if a site is a scam site:

    1. It will have lots of google ads
    2. Will have been created within the past week or few days
    3. Will promise a full size product or a sample that's too good to be true.
    4. Will use copyrighted images for national brand products but not link to their site or other product info.
    5. Will not have any way to confirm your sample order such as a confirming email.
    6. Will not have a street address and working phone number in the contact area
    7. May or may not have a goofy fake-sounding name as the person who runs it.
    8. the sites are posted on freebie forums by the same person or persons.

Also they can make a lot of money selling physical addresses of people, then from the email addresses.Unfortunately, the sites are created to be up for only a very limited period of time and by the time people start questioning them, the have been taken down. Of course, in the time they were up, they likely harvested hundreds if not thousands of names, addresses and emails from unsuspecting members who assume if it's posted, it must be legit.

They can get anywhere from 2p to 5p a name and home address depending upon who rents or buys their lists, it is a very simple scam that goes like this:

    1. Create scam offers using common brand names
    2. Post such offers yourself or post them somewhere where you know a very active User will find them and then post them here and other places.
    3. Sit back and collect the names and home address until somebody labels it a scam.
    4. Take the site offline and start over again using a new domain name then start with step number 1 and repeat as necessary.

See? Nothing elaborate at all. The person or persons simply trust the short memories of freebie seekers and/or the constant supply of new users who aren't yet hip to the forumla they use. One person could do it very easily.

Unfortunately ist going to get more common as scamsters look for other ways to make money. They rely on peoples greed, simply dangle a carrot in front of someone in the hope some mug falls for the scam. As stated they flog your details in a database, they get paid and gain a small amount through ads on the site.

As I stated the other day that Lints chocolate looks suspect. Another give away is that they use web mail to contact address and there url is register via proxy so it hides there identity.

Sadly we all must be more vigilant, because there some rather nasty people out there
  • Thanks for the warning - we should all be wary about internet security/safety regarding our personal details.

Thanks to this site, I now question the validity etc of certain offers/freebies/internet websites. THANK YOUXX!!

. . . and on the subject of thanks, special thanks to poppycock for flagging up the questions over the Lindt site.

By complete coincidence, I'd only just downloaded and activated the 'smart whois' software on the giveaway of the day website mentioned elsewhere on MSE.

I now use it to check the url / domain of every Internet freebie. Guess there'll be other programs out there that do the same thing so as john said, about the way this kind of scam becoming more common, software which validates an offer's provenance is invaluable: click first, sign up afterwards. . . And if you see any mention of the word 'proxy' in the search results, don't sign up to anything at all. . .

THIS SITE is a very good whois lookup. This is where I found all the details for the sites posted in this thread.
