Once its disappeared open a new one straight away, I did this on the 21st when mine matured.

Would they honour the rate for online applications received up to midnight today as they won't open the account until tomorrow at the earliest?

Regular saver accounts opened via online banking opens in seconds and the standing order is set up and transfer in is done as part of the opening transaction.

M&S site shows regular saver account at 5% already.
  • Just for info: I contacted Virgin about their regular saver as I wasn't sure about one of the terms. Response was as I'd expected. Posting it here in case it is useful to others.
Reading the account literature, I note that annual interest is paid on the 11th March.

Is there another interest payment (for the period 11th March -> 20th October) when the account matures on the 20th October?
I confirm interest is paid on 11th March. Once your account matures, interest will be paid upon closure/transfer.

Sorry - I should have clarified that I was talking about the HSBC one. Westie983 is correct for the First Direct one (it opens instantly), the HSBC one doesn't open instantly; and B_G_B is correct about the M&S one (that it dropped yesterday). (You can't apply for the M&S one online.)

I've answered my own question about the HSBC one - took the plunge and applied for one yesterday (I have a Graduate account so would get the 4% one). It was opened today so I rang them up to check the rate I was getting and the guy I spoke to didn't even know it had dropped today (he said it'd be good if they'd send something out to the staff!). But he checked and I'm getting 4% (the rate it was at when I applied).

I kept getting error message about a technical fault, told to try again later or phone an 0845 number. Eventually phoned, to find the phone number had changed over a year ago and that the 'technical error' was because Santander do not allow SOs to be started on a non working day
FCA regulations effective 26 October 2015 require banks, card companies and insurers to use 'basic rate' telephone numbers starting 01, 02, 03 or 080 for contact by existing customers.

Almost all firms have complied, but most have failed to properly update websites, apps, document templates, email templates and various paperwork. Be sure to complain to the FCA.

    Hi Folks,

I have completed this weekend's update for the first page of this thread.

    - Leek United BS and Furness BS accounts updated (both had interest rate changes noted for October that have now come to pass)
    - HSBC, First Direct and M&S account interest rates updated to 5%/3%, 5% and 5% respectively
    - Ipswich BS Smart Save (Issue 1) account withdrawn
    - Ipswich BS Smart Save (Issue 2) account introduced paying 2.75% variable (but includes a fixed 2.5% bonus interest) on up to £500 per month (£1,000 per month for a joint account) with 1 missed payment and 2 penalty-free withdrawals per year, only available to locals or existing members, can be opened by post. My understanding of the terms and conditions is that you can keep earning the annual bonus indefinitely, so I have put this account in post 2 (no maturity date).

I do not cover regular savings ISA accounts in this thread but I will mention that Ipswich BS have also introduced a 2% regular savings cash ISA (fixed until April 2018). I will post a note on this on Kazza242's ISA thread.

Many thanks to all the forum users who have provided useful information throughout the week.

I will do another update next weekend.

Cambridge Building Society have launched a new Reg Saver (Issue 5)

    £300 per month
    2% fixed rate

As they were inundated with applications for issue 4, this is branch only this time.
