Great Hunt: What stops you switching broadband?

Switching is a buzzword often associated with household utility bills.

With Ofcom pushing for the telecoms market to be more competitive, we're trying to work out what stops people switching broadband providers. Is it the hassle factor, technical issues (ie, you're worried about losing service) or have you haggled down the cost so you don't need to?

Whatever your reasons, please share them below.

Regrettably it's broadband speed - Virgin Media provides 50mbps+; in my area the closest any other provider can get is 17mbps. :(

The possibility of a problem service elsewhere and being made a good offer to stay.

I'm with Virgin and get (real-world, not up to) 152Mbps, going up to 300Mbps soon.

The next fastest I can get is 76Mbps. Quite a difference.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
  • I don't buy my broadband service on price, I buy it on how good the ISP is and what features they provide. I haven't changed ISP since ADSL came to where I lived in 2003, and I can't see that I ever will. I'm not going to get my own /28 from anyone else nowadays.

Risk of interruption to service: too many people I know have lost their service temporarily during a switch, and I need broadband for work so can't afford to risk being without it for even a short time.

I switch every year, this year the price has rocketed.

Last year was with BT, counting 250 quidco plus 150 Sains voucher they paid me about 35 quid for the year.

This year 60 tcb plus 100 mastercard means it will cost me £40 with Sky - what a rip off :(

Sadly I really need to go fibre as 8mbs just doesn't cut it any more but that seems to cost at least 170pa :(
    I think....

I'm happy with my isp and the price i pay - for something this important I would not switch providers simply to save a few pounds. It is NOT like switching gas and electric where you get the same product regardless of who provides it!
  • Er, because we're quite happy with what we've got?

There is actually more to life than saving a few pennies, you know!:)

That's about it for me as well.

No other supplier in my area can get anything like the same speed VM offer me, or the reliability*.

I'm also quite partial to the fact that if there is a problem with my connection, with VM it's entirely up to one company to sort it out, no quibbles about if it's the people that I've signed up to, the people that own the cabling, the equipment being used etc, it's all down to the same company who provide the service, own the line and provide the modem.

I like the idea of saving money, but not at the expense of the connection or potentially having to spend ages going back and forth in the event of a problem (something several friends with ADSL have had to do).

*It's rare for it to go down even for an hour (I think it did it twice last year), and very very rare for it to go down for more than a couple of hours unless there is a major problem affecting far more than just the internet - the longest downtime I can remember was about 3 days when there was bad flooding in a nearby area and I think all the ducting, a number of street cabs and one of the VM buildings got flooded.
  • I cannot change my broadband supplier at present because I will lose my email address. Previously an old supplier agreed to forward any emails sent to my email address but my present supplier (Utility Warehouse) refuses to do this. So I have had to create a gmail email address and gradually wean all my contacts off my old email. A real pain!
