Having to do things in Linux via commands in the Terminal can be a real off-putter for many. Big strides seem to have been made in recent times in overcoming this and I found most actions/installations don't now need it.

Anything that does still need the Terminal confuses me but there's usually enough code to be found in Linux forums that can be copy/pasted to help with this. Even so, until everything can be done without resorting to the Terminal and putting in lines of code, Linux perhaps will never be as popular as Windows.

  • why are we discussing Linux and other OSs on a thread that is clearly marked as "windows 10"

perhaps you should start a new thread and call in Linux ,

Because people who are being offered the Windows 10 upgrade, may wish to use this time to look for an alternative, which would be linux.

In a topic about Lloyds bank, I guarantee you'll find lots of posts about Santander, TSB etc.

In Windows there are times you need to use powershell and the CLI for advanced options.

and a lots of other people who actually use their computer for work.
They really do not have the time to sort out linux 'issues'.
They want to load up the software, know that it will install, work with their printer, and the rest and start getting the job done.

Like others on this forum I don't know anyone who uses linux on a desktop computer.

Invaluable tool for a techies workstation. Personally I have Linux, OSX and W7 that run bare metal on my DT and everything else runs in a VM. My personal choice is KDE Linux>W7>OSX=W10, I have a strong distaste of W8 GUI idiosyncrasies. The sharpest criticism I have of W10 is forced updates for pro versions and the lack of detail regarding updates, it's an issue MS need to sort out before I give them a decent grading for W10. I'd like to see the old behaviour of "inform and let me choose" for W10pro, after all it is supposed to be the professional version.

My Tablet Mode tab in Win 10 is greyed out.

I have tried (as microsoft suggest) tried to manually turn on going to: Start-Settings-System-Tablet Mode- the switch saying Make windows more touch frieldly is greyed and can not be operated and I have tried switching 'hide app icons' which does'nt do anything.

Can someone please tell me how to turn on tablet mode?

The first, and most obvious question aardvaark - are you using a tablet, or a desktop or a laptop?

The default Win10 install is not free and no longer a product, your 'free' upgrade will make you [personally] their product, they own you and all your family and will make mi$$ions for Microsoft when, like Android & Google before them they sell your information.

Time wasted reading the 12,000 words in the Win10 service agreement will reveal paragraphs like :
Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies; 2.protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of the services, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone; 3.operate and maintain the security of our services, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or 4.protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services – however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement.

Cortana has access to camera, microphone, contacts, calendar, and documents. The Edge browser [integrated PDF and Adobe Flash reader] is more of an exploitable spy than the iniquitous Google Chrome and that's really going some. Win7 is now subject to the same retrospective and arbitrary forced agreement. The European digital rights organisation [EDRi] sums up the company’s 45 pages of terms and conditions by saying: “Microsoft basically grants itself very broad rights to collect everything you do, say and write with and on your devices in order to sell more targeted advertising or to sell your data to third parties.”

I'm a Win10 Pro user, but know how to protect myself, I have an Android 1+2 and know how to protect myself on Cyanogen and had the 1+1 before it.

Best of luck with Win7 & 8 & 10 'selective' updates, many million of dollars depend on users never being able to turn them off. Auto hidden installed updates or zero updates ever including virus protection et al is the new name of the game. Unless a megga trading block like Europe successfully challenge it in law - I can't ever see it happening. Take care Fightsback !
