I live in north Kent but can drive easily from here as I know Bromley quite well.
Had a great day out yesterday and after the Dover Castle trip we popped into have a cuppa at my eldest DDs caravan as she was there with her OH in Deal.Journey back home was a nightmare as the roads were gridlocked and we eventually came off the motorway and drove through Faversham on the old A2.

Youngest DD has decided to do the 'Race for Life' in July at Mote Park, Maidstone, and has signed us BOTH up for it :) now 'racing' is not really my thing, as I'm really not built for it :) I'll give a stately hobble a go. As long as I have my trusty stick with me I daresay I shall have a go with her.We start our 'training' shortly.
I am a lady who wallks from her front door, to her car door, so watch this space :):):)

Seriously though when I went through the treatment and the mastectomy and chemo,r/therapy etc it wasn't the best thing in my life, but it does make you appreciate the things that you maybe have never thought about before.

I doubt that many familes haven't been touched by the Big C in one way or another even if its just friends you have known.I was one of the lucky ones and survived. If I can raise some cash to help others, then my knackered feet and sore joints will heal So I am going to give it a go :):):)

My DD Tessa did a 10 mile hike last month for a little girl locally who is having a bad time and needs specialist care and I was really proud of her as she too isn't really made for walking or running. If she can do it then I am happy to walk, hobble with her.

Today is another NSD as I have enough in store to keep me going and tonight is quiz night and I get fed there so no cooking for me tonight.
The sun is out and shining away at the moment, this week will whizz by I think.Lovely names for the new baby aren't they.Glad they used Diana as one of them
    Have a good day everyone

I would love to go to a meet up but being in Greater Manchester it is not just the journey it costs quite a lot. I did not join MSE to save just because I wanted to, I really needed to or we would not have eaten.

    Morning All,

Scandalously late this morning as my DB rang around 11pm to say that he's on the final push of getting the legal matter I told you about sorted. It's a big weight off his shoulders after all this time, and although he isn't getting what he should do, at least there will be some sort of closure for him.

Lynn, may I say from years of experience:D (didn't know whether to put a grin, wink or embarrassed there, but thought I better be truthful and go with a grin) with dating men, as we get older men seem to get keener than we are about 'settling down'. And when we know where we are meeting up, I would be grateful for your advice on where to stay. (cheap but clean)

Jan, we're already on eight people if I've counted right and nursemaggie, maybe if there are more of us from the North, and someone has a car, we could club together for the petrol and other expenses? Just a thought - early days yet.

Jackie, well done you for going in for the 'run' - let me know the details and I'll sponsor you - it won't be much, but every little helps. As you say, one way or other cancer touches nearly all of our lives. I am very lucky not to have experienced it in my family, but a very dear friend died of liver cancer last December. She originally had breast cancer and I went with her from the diagnosis, through all the chemo, operation, radiotherapy etc. She had five more years and then contracted liver cancer. It was still a big shock when she died, even though we knew that was inevitable. I was with her near the end. Did anyone see the play on Sunday about cancer, based on a real person - I thought it was very moving.

My friend and her husband are coming to lunch tomorrow and then I'm going back with them for a few days in Horncastle so will post a couple more recipes before I disappear for a few days. Have a good day, All.

    Speak later.

Quite understand Nursemaggie - our pennies can only stretch so far and have to be prioritised - that's what we're all here for.
Maybe as someone suggested there could be a North & South meet up? I'm sure those in the middle may want to go to both!!

Ooops - crossed with Vhalla's post!

I realised my long boots need heeling, so off into town to get them heeled. That way I know they'll be ready to wear next winter and won't be tempted to buy a new pair. When I think back to how I used to waste money buying all those clothes and shoes when I was younger! Now it's one item beyond wear before I buy another.

I wish I could grow vegetables in the garden, but two mad greyhounds dig everything up. They even jump up and take the apples of the dwarf trees.

Will carry on with the socks, but, after the suggestion to do gloves as well, have also started a pair of fingerless gloves.

Wishing everyone a good, if blustery, day.

That`s such a good idea Silvasava to bring another 3 so why not think of a suitable few dates maybe to give everyone maximum notice.

I`m thinking of hosting it here and perhaps to do a lunch + tea. Old Style of course! I have plenty of crockery so that isnt a problem and it would save on trying to find a venue etc. It would be good if people could bring a dish each and then people travelling on public transport could bring something simple. I can provide cakes etc.

In the interests of personal safety, I will give out my address by PM nearer the time and will reserve it to first come first served. I think 20 would be my maximum but obviously if anyone could think of another venue which would be easier/more accessible/take more people then that`s fine.

Please let me know what you think or any ideas. My other suggestion was to ask if we all put £5 in and the collection can go to a nominated charity.

Whoops- managed to miss a few posts. Jackie - if you are happy I would like to suggest that any monies we collect go to a cancer charity. I thought the programme on Sunday was excellent and not mawkish. I will sponsor you too.

Vhalla- I could easily look up suitable places to stay nearer the time and already know of one place very close to where I live.

Hope everyone is ok with coming here even tho` we havent actually met! I have had a CRB check done!

Very happy to make a donation to a Cancer charity - I didn't watch the programme on Sunday TBH it was because I was so lucky in having an early diagnosis I'm trying to get on with RL and put it behind me. So sorry about Rio Ferdiand's young wife too - nasty, evil little C.
As I'm a 'lady of leisure' now I can be pretty free until September! Kent will be a doddle after last weekend's jaunt to Bourne via Great Wakering!!

Sounds good to me Jan - depends on everyone else.

Here is the Granny Spice Cake recipe that someone asked me for. I dug out the original recipe - from a Woman's Realm Booklet called Cheap Dishes in Disguise, dated 1968! (GQ - do I need to de-hoard this one??)

12 Ozs Plain Flour ( I use SR)
    pinch salt
2 Level tsps baking powder (I use 1)
1 level tsp mixed spice (or more if you like it)
    5ozs cheapest margarine
    6ozs caster sugar
    6oz currants
    3oz sultanas
1oz chopped mixed peel (I just use 10oz of mixed dried fruit)
    1 large egg
    Milk to mix

    Oven: 350 deg F Gas Mark 4
Grease & line a 7in round cake tin
(I usually grease well and flour 'cos my tin is an awkward shape)
Sift flour, salt, baking powder and mixed spice into a bowl, add margarine and rub until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs
    (or blitz in the processor)
    Mix in sugar and fruit
beat egg and add to dry ingredients with enough milk to make a stiff dropping consistency
Turn the mixture into the tin and make a slight hollow in the centre.
At this stage I sprinkle the top with Demerara sugar for that lovely crunchy finish
Bake in centre of oven for 1hr 45mins - test with skewer to see if cake is done & leave in the tin to cool

A nice 'elevenses' cake that's not too rich.
