How many points with Avios would get you an upgrade on a flight back from Vegas from a world traveller seat or is this not possible ?

I've just checked and now have 40,000 points and wondered if this would get an upgrade. Cheers !

At the moment we wont be using BA next year, booked with Virgin (Orlando), Thomas Cook (Vegas) and Thomsons (Italy) but you never know for another Thanksgiving visit :o

It's possible but pretty much a complete waste given it most likely won't save you any money. For random dates in July, a return in economy with the flight back upgraded to premium economy is £1308 + 12,500 avios. Just use cash and the same flights (economy out, premium economy back) are £1271, plus you'd be earning more avios.

There are some examples where it could work out with marginal savings, but I doubt any will be worthwhile.

Thanks for the update Calum, I had a look earlier and tried a few dates but no flights were coming up.

Am I correct in thinking Status or being a higher class of Avios is more important ?

No, it makes no difference whatsoever.

To upgrade an economy fare it needs to be a more expensive flexible ticket. These tickets often cost more than a non-flexible discounted premium economy ticket.

You can however upgrade any premium economy ticket to club world (subject to availability).
  • Re: Yankee candles, we prefer the ones from Bath and Body Works... we stocked upon our last trip, but when we got home, US Customs had forced open our bag on suspicion of unusual content - the candles!

They look like cartoon bombs - I got pulled at security a few years ago after my carry on went through xray. The first thing the ssecurity guy said was 'I betchya got candles!"

Have enjoyed reading the forum and previous trip reports, so here is a wee short version of ours!

Left Glasgow to Vegas for 5 night in November this year
Flew BA via Gatwick twice before, this was the first time via Terminal 5, had a nice meal in Giraffe restaurant, (quick service in case u are in a hurry)
Uneventful flight and arrived on schedule although our bags were about the last to come off.

Arrived at the Cromwell Hotel for our 5 night stay
Staff were very attentive, the rooms are smaller than the other rooms we have stayed in (Aria, Cosmo) but still roomy
It was dark in the room and we overlooked the side of Ballys , we were prepared and brought ear plugs for the noise from Drais nightclub, but we never heard it through the night. Met another resident and reception had given him ear plugs for the noise.
There was alway security at the lift, We felt very safe in this hotel.
There was tea and coffee at the lift entrance, which was fab too(we are easily pleased)

That night we were cream cracked and walked round to Guy Fieri's restaurant, this was really good value and we both enjoyed it.

    2nd day
Our friends were staying in the Cosmo, so we went up to the wicked spoon, shopped at Ross and around the strip that day, later on we picked up our tickets for Ka, and took my daughter up to the Sharks Reef (via myvegas).

We went to PF Changs for early evening dinner, and then off to the Ka show, I enjoyed this show, quite dramatic too. We were really tired and we had walked up and down the strip all day.

    2nd Day

Got a quick breakfast, picked up rental from Hertz at the Cosmo and drove to Primm outlet, we had heard mixed report of this outlet, but we got lots of bargains and felt it was worthwhile.
Came back to Vegas and went to a Wallmart to get supplies, first time there.

Went to Mirage buffet (bogof voucher x2) The cashiet would only honour 1 person free although we had 2 voucher, she was really stern and the big q behind us was tutting, no so keen on this buffet, maybe that cashier had dampened our enjoyment.

Went to see Beatles Love, took my daughter and friends last time I saw it I was 2nd row from the front, this time 5th row from the back, I enjoed this seat better as i could see all the performers, my daughter was quite overwhelmed with it all.

    3rd day
went to sugar factory for breakfast, via groupon coupon and really enjoyed.
Drove to fashion show mall, bought make up and clinique , it was reasonable in Macys
Shopping in the afternoon and went to see Rod Stewart in Caesars Palace that night.

    Sunday

We drove to Valley of Fire enjoyed it , it was colder than we expected, lesson learned,
We drove back to Vegas to avoid the strip getting shut for the Marathon, when we got back they had started shutting the Mandalay Bay end sooner than advertised so it took us longer to get back to the hotel.
Initially I had booked Mon Ami Gabi for our birthday dinner that day and to use our Total rewards points via Social rewards, after I booked it I phoned to double check, yip they no longer accept total rewards point as payment towards the meal. I cancelled it and we had our dinner at PF Changs which we again enjoyed.

    Next day
Flight departed on time, uneventful flights

Don't know if Ill be able to go back next year, but really enjoyed our trip

Thanks very much for your trip report! For the future, I think you could have charged MAG to your room at Cromwell and used TR points that way - use them to pay off the MAG room charge at the front desk.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • Regarding MAG. In Sept 2014 I just converted 5000 TR points into 50 dollar voucher for MAG at Paris TR desk. Is this no longer available?
