Rail Travel: Tips on Cheap Tickets

You need to buy an off peak return to Peterborough (£109.20), get off the East Coast train there and change to an FCC train to Kings Cross (£50.50 anytime return) . On return get an FCC train to Peterborough and change there back to an East Coast train
If you are prepare to wait until later in the evening to return from Kings Cross advance singles in each direction may be slightly cheaper (and certainly provide a faster ride) than that split ticketing. Buy them from the East Coast site for a discount.0 -

Being the fountain of all knowledge could you please assist me.
We are a family of 4,( 2 adults, a sixteen year old and a 13 year old). We have a Family and Friends card which the 16 year old misses out on so its 3 adults and 1 child.
We will travel from Glasgow to London on Sunday 1st July earliest train possible and return Monday 9th July after midday. At the moment the price is around £270 return.
Would split ticketing help or is it worthwhile waiting a few weeks to see if the price drops.
Thank you for your help.

I intend to travel from Newcastle to London on 18 April. Need to be in London by 0830, return anytime after 1730. prices coming at £200 now. Can someone please help me if possible locate it any cheaper. I dont know how to do this split tickets trick. thanks!
If you tick the option of going via Leeds this could make it cheaper - I did this for a journey down from the North East to London in May, and saved quite a lot - it does make the journey a bit longer though0 -

If so, they can still get a discounted child ticket.
From the F&F Railcard FAQs...3. What happens if my child turns 16 while my Family & Friends Railcard is still valid?
If you have a 1 year Family & Friends Railcard children who turn 16 while your Family & Friends Railcard is valid are still entitled to the discounted child fare. This lasts as long as your 1 year Family & Friends Railcard is valid.
If your child turns 16 during the validity period of your 3 year Family & Friends Railcard, they can only travel as a child on the card until the day before they turn 17.0 -
Hi there,
I hope this is the right place to ask - I didn't want to start a new thread.
I'm really struggling to find 'cheap' tickets (return) between Cheltenham and Peterborough - leaving pm of Thursday 3th May and returning Monday (bank-holiday) 7th May (pm).
I've tried to split the route into singles to Chelt - Birmingham etc but it's not any cheaper, or more.
The trip is working out at £60-£70. There are some slightly cheaper tickets, but you arrive between midnight and 1am, via London which is totally inflexible. I'm not a big fan of daylight, but those times are stretching it!
I thought this would be sufficient time 'in advance' but these ticket prices have sky-rocketed in the past 5 years, and this isn't much cheaper 4 weeks before the day.
If I try to get a bus it's 6-8 hours which is crazy for a 3 hour journey.
Can anyone help with these ticket prices, and can anyone suggest who I can complain to? It will probably completely fall on deaf ears....0 -

Try splitting at Leicester, with some planning the return trip can be done for £45 using Advance tickets or if you can't get a good combination then get Advance singles Cheltenham to Leicester and an Off Peak Return Leicester to Peterborough for £19.50 total £51 return. Can anyone help with these ticket prices, and can anyone suggest who I can complain to? You could try Passenger Focus but please remember trains are now run by private companies, whose priority is profit.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -

I don't believe Virgin have released their cheap tickets for any date in July yet so it would be worth waiting - probably a couple of weeks for both dates
The price you have found (I assume £263.85) can be bought on the day of travel if need be so no point in buying it until you are 100% sure there is nothing cheaper.
If you can get advance singles each way I wouldn't faff about splitting.0 -

Thanks! I've got it down to £41. Singles to Chelt > Leicester (£13), Leicester > Peterborough (£6.50).0 -

Wow - check out https://www.mytrainticket.co.uk !
I've got a £71.30 return down to £28.50 (for two singles), making a saving of £42.80! (actually Cheltenham to Huntingdon - via London, not via Birmingham). You can get even cheaper tickets if you don't want to get back home at 1am.
National Rail Enquiries nor TrainLine give these cheaper options by default, unless you specify 'VIA London'...and then the return single isn't available on all these sites.
NRE doesn't show the return journey single but suggests a Finsbury Park > London Euston single for £88.70 rather than the £16.50 single through London Kings Cross/Paddington.
The cheapest options on myTrainTicket are shown straight-away, with no ambiguity, and no need to specify 'Travel via' routes.
I think NRE and the TrainLine are doing a disservice to their customers by not showing the cheapest tickets and requiring you to specify the 'VIA' route. I think the searches are almost designed to favour the more expensive prices.
