With the mirror idea its best to be careful, as birds dont realise its just the mirror's reflection of a garden and think its real, so can break their necks hitting the glass trying to fly through it.

All your other ideas are great though and I'll definitely try your cane support trellis idea.

At last, someone is talking sense about mirrors in gardens! Putting a mirror in such a position is a seriously stupid thing to do for all the reasons mentioned. Please, please DON'T DO IT. For the same commensense reasons, please don't plant lillies - they are poisonous to cats.
My advice to anyone trying to tackle a seriously neglected and overgrown garden like mine is to cut back as much as possible, and then forget all your organic ideals and use strong weedkiller. Most of them now pose no risk to children or pets once they are dry.
i am sorry but to say putting a mirror in your garden is seriously stupid is not always correct. IF you have problems then by all means remove it. IF your dog / cat tends to be of a nervous disposition and mistakes itself for the enemy then by all means remove it . If not enjoy it like i and my friends have[with pets] its called freedom of choice and common sense.
p.s. does that mean neighbours cant plant lilies either ? also the risk of "strong" weedkillers drifting in the breeze or treated plants being consumed is of far more danger to children and pets ?

I was putting wee in the compost quite frequently but after a while all my lovely worms started to disappear, then i read somewhere not to put too much wee as the worms don't like too much acidity or something, also mens wee contains more nitrogen?.I find if I use 50% wee and water it certainly makes the grass greener, but it has to be Men only.:j
Not sure if true but they also say that if a man "wees" around the perimeter of a chicken pen the fox wont cross the line!! dont shoot the messenger!!

Post a Wanted ad on your local Gumtree or Freecycle/Freegle website. You will be surprised how many keen gardeners come out of the woodwork to offer you their surplus plants in small pots: they generally have quite a production line going, both for spares and new planting, and are happy to encourage new gardeners with some gifts.

I had trouble with foxes trashing the garden until someone recommended the husband wee around the garden perimeter. Believe me it worked for us, so could possibly work around chicken pen ?? Its worth a try. :p

Freecycle is excellent for getting free plants/shrubs/gardening equipment etc. I also go round the Local Charity Open Gardens scheme and people often sell off plants/cuttings very cheap, even fountains !! I paid £80 for a second hand fountain that sells for £400 in the garden centres, very posh, everyone comments on it makes me feel quite smug. he he.

I bet it is not the real stuff. What do Trading Standards think.

I've seen some rubbish called "Creocote" on sale - winter rain washes it out of the wood in a season.

3 Stay away from garden centres. Poundland, Lidl, Aldi and Poundstretcher are all much better value.. Aldi has some good deals tomorrow, especially the Japanese acers, which were over £20 even from my local market

Wilkinsons are also an excellent place to try out. I bought a small Acer today for £3, coriander with a terracotta pot for 59p plus quite a few terracotta pots for 99p each. They have lots of plants outside my local branch for really good prices.
