  • I use Tiscali and having had problems in the past and liking my e mail address have been reluctant to change. I rang them today (Customer care line 0845 0774488 is better than the 0870 numbers) to swap to the advertised rate which is lower than my tariff. I was delighted to find that for users of over 12 months they have even lower tariffs. Shame they don't tell anyone about them! I am now paying £9.99 for my broadband. So if your 12 months is up give them a ring and check out your options. Probably worth a try with other providers as well.

I definitely do not think of myself as a techy dunce but even I have begun to go red at the thought of properly organising myself for tv, internet and phone...

Been with Wanadoo Broadband for 14 months now. Recently clicked on and on their homepage is an advert for Broadband at £14.99. Emailed and asked can I change to that amount as I have paid £17.99 for over a year.
    REPLY...NO...New customers only.
So I will change to another provider...Do not know wuo yet will have to take advice.
Will there be a gap between dropping one and taking on another and are there any problems with changing providers ???

If you request a MAC from Wanado and then quote that when 'migrating' to your new provider, you will only be without connection for a minute or two - the time it takes to enter your new user name and password. Should take less than 10 days from when you sign up to your new provider to switch to them.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)

A MAC is a "migration authorisation code" and generally, you get one of these from the IP you're leaving, and give it to the one you want to join and means that you don't have to cancel your old provider before starting up with another (if they ever ask if you want to cancel, say no - you want to migrate, otherwise you could be without broadband for weeks).

I'm currently with plusnet, and so far (although only been with them a couple of months) have not had any major problems. Connection always seems okay, they have a good website and they're good at keeping their status page updated. They also have a virus checker that checks e-mails BEFORE it gets to your inbox, which is handy.

Depending what you use the internet for, they have two normal packages for speeds up to 2mb, both uncapped - a £14.99 per month one which is a 50:1 contention (same as most others), however, it is aimed at those who just browse, collect e-mail, do the odd download, etc - no good if you do a lot of file sharing, etc. The other one is £21.99 pm, 30:1 contention and is aimed at those who do lots of downloads. There is also more webspace, static IP and a few other bonuses. The more expensive one also has a special deal on at the moment where for the first 3 months it is only £9.99.

I used to be with NDO and, as I mentioned, only moved a couple of months ago - at the time plusnet was the best reliable deal that I could find. Of course, someone else might have improved their offer since then ;)

I would never email a request like that, I'd always ring up - it's far too easy for them to fob someone off by email, much harder to turn down someone who says they're going to change ISP, and asks for their name so they can complain about them ;)
Thanks to all who post constructively.
