I have just rediscovered Knitting
I am knitting THIS hat for a 17 year old (girl) for Xmas and a scarf (just cast on until it's about wide enough then knit one pearl one until it's long enough) using motled purple chunky knit wool total cost £3.39 (for one ball of wool which gives enough wool for both hat and scarf) Loads cheaper than £12.99+ from C&A or wherever. It took me about 3 hours to knit it (then I unpicked it because it was full of holes :-[, it looked good though, apart from the holes)
There are loads of free patterns on the internet just type 'free knitting patterns' in a search engine
This is my favorite out of the ones I've found: Elvis wig ;DWhen life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -

When money is tight, I resort to giving things which are either homemade or something that will bring a laugh.
One year, I gave batteries which I'd bought from the £ shop with a tag attached: "Gift not included"~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PMS Pot: £57.53 Pigsback Pot: £23.00
