I read (I think it was in the Sunday paper) that record coasters (see HERE for an example) are the latest designer must have for trendies. My local charity shop had 6 records for a £1 on Saturday. I'm sure you could cut the middles out and neaten the edges with something.

If you can get your kids involved in making things, so much the better. That way if you're not very "arty", you can always pass off your amateurish attempts as the kids.............
My sister is very good at these sort of things. Some of the things we've had made by her & the kids:

Plant pots - cheap terracotta plant pots painted with emulsion paint - sponged patterns are easy. She did them to match kitchen decor. Not great for outdoor use but ideal with a pot of supermarket or even homegrown herbs.

Salt dough decorations - fish & mermaids for bathrooms, animals, name plates etc. Simplest & most stylish were initial letters, sprayed gold. Push a paper clip in as a hanging hook.

Decorated glasses - either buy cheap wine glasses from the pound shop or use jam jars etc.

Fairgirl, 8) 8) ;D That's a brilliant idea, I love it. Infact, I might use it for my family Christmas cards.

  • AAHHHH what an exciting thread (OK so I am a little sad). I love home made stuff. It is great to do with the kids and saves money. Here are a few of my ideas -

I love christmas cooking and last year I used little well washed and lined beans tins to make mini christmas puddings. Used thick christmas ribbon, from Ikea, to wrap around the tin and bob's your aunty!

I make chocolate rum truffles (recipe is on the money saving christmas tips thread) wrap up a cluster yum yum

I got a box of dead cheap Ikea candles, plain white then went to a local craft shop and got wafer thin modelling wax of many colours. It cost about £4. You can cut it out in to shapes, mold it with your hands whatever. You make the desired shape, stars are good for the time of year and then press it onto the candle. The kids can do it to.

My oldest and I made paper stars one year. It envolves a bit of cutting, folding and gluing and they look really good.

For little ones (2-5)I recently made a felt purse with my incredibly poor stitching abilities. A rectangle of felt, folded half way and then blanket stitch all the way round, I used silk threads. Sew a button and a loop of thread on the top for a clasp. Personalise it by sewing the childs name on and bob's your aunty!

I am sorely tempted to finish with merry christmas but it is a bit early even for a santa lover like me!!! ;D ;D ;D
