NAMESCO Renewal

ask for the MAC on 28th August - from what you have put, Namesco won't be charging for the speed upgrade, but they never said that they would put your friend in another 12 month contract ... they can't renew a contract unless your friend agrees to it
either way, your friend will have to pay for the 13th month, as it will take about a week for the MAC to go through - they won't give your friend a weeks free broadband
as for the £40 disconnection fee - sounds like your friend told them to cancel the connection, ie. remove broadband from your line. Many contracts include a term on the likes of any changes made to your contract will be published either by letter, email, or on our website - now this would have probably changed in the first quarter of the year after BT annouced the introduction of this disconnection (cessation as BT call it) charge. Then your friend would have been able to cancel the contract, as they altered it - depending on the contract Namesco would give you something like 14 days to disagree - but after then they assume you accept the change.0 -
My deal ends 31 August. Namesco offered me 13 months for price of 12 @ £14.95/month for 2mb service or £11.95/month for 512k. No exit charge if I give them 30 days notice at end of contract.
Think I will go for Virgin 2mb £10/month deal. Installation is only £15 if you apply online and may be able to get £55 cashback through quidco? Don't need a mac but still need to give Namesco 30 days notice. Presumably can still do this through control panel.0 -
Thanks for the contributions guy - at the THIRD time of asking, guess what, Namesco came up with the solution for my friend that I thought would be the win:win one for them and him...
ie he'd already told them he wasn't going to continue beyond 28/8 (ie 30 days+ notice) and they are now content for him to submit a MAC request and migrate away before the 28/8 end of one year contract (which would have continued if he had not chosen to cancel the service).
Although Namesco's control panel system for him then wanted c£70 for the MAC, he was told to just omit the credit card details and it would all go through free as he'd paid for the year up front.
Namesco's stance all seems a bit confused to me still, but as they've given my friend the free of charge(s) escape route he wanted, all's well that ends well.0 -

I think you need to watch out for one potential CATCH if you DON'T migrate with a MAC. That is that a NEW provider can't put in an application to activate broadband for your phoneline IF there is broadband on it already. They have to wait until there's been a cease that's been effected. That can mean a period of two weeks or so WITHOUT broadband - and even at 512Kb you will really miss it if you have to resort to sub-56Kb 1p/minute dialup 084x access instead.
Not only that but it could be more than two weeks if your old provider is slow at initiating that cease on your broadband circuit.
I suffered this first hand when e7even without any notice just left hundreds/thousands of us in the lurch back in Spring 2006 and I ended up without broadband from 19/4 all the way through to 11/5 as I couldn't get a new circuit ordered until EVENTUALLY the orphaned e7even circuit was removed (and I was one of the quickest/luckiest customers, some waited months). There have been some OFCOM regulations (in part prompted by us aggrieved e7even customers) since to mitigate such situations but there will always be a delay/gap when you're WITHOUT broadband if you don't migrate with a MAC.
Of course if you're going for a new broadband service that doesnt use your phoneline - eg a Virgin CABLED service - then my caveat doesn't apply. Just make sure you keep a note of who/what/when at Namesco said they wouldn't be stiffing you with exit charge(s); and be sure you're not implicitly entering into a FRESH 12 month contract - ie yet more with potential penalties.0 -

I am migrating to cable which is why I don't need a mac but how do I make sure Namesco broadband is cleared from my phone line just in case I ever go back to ADSL?0
