As per recipe book that came with the slow cooker....
heat 1 tbsp oil in pan and brown
4 chicken joints ( I used a couple of chopped chicken breasts), until brown. Transfer to SC.
Chop up 2 onions and fry till transparent,
stir in
2 tablespoons of cornflour and add a
quarter of pint of chickens stock gradually...stirring all the time. Add
juice of one lemon , 2 tbsp of soy sauce, 1 tsp sugar, salt pepper and 12 oz of button mushrooms halved. Bring to boil and cover chicken..
I cooked mine all day whilst at work auto 8 hours. Does say high 3 and half to 5 hours as well ...but am sure you all know .
Ma
as usual ..i changed things a wee bit !!!! only one onion and fewer mushrooms more stock .... but thats to suit me!0 -

I have a large old Prestige slow cooker - this is fine for large amounts because I can freeze what isn't needed but if I wanted to cook a small amount for just 2 of us (say to try out a new recipe that I'm not sure we would like) it is spread so thinly on the base (it has very wide shallow bowl) this means it can dry out - so the question is - do you think that I could put this smaller amount of food in a pyrex dish and then sit it in the slow cooker?0

I should imagine it would work if your poured some boiling water in around the dish to help conduct the heat. I'd be interested to see if it works as I have the same problem if I just want to cook a dish for one meal (2 of us) rather then in bulk for freezing."An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

I remember someone saying that they had cooked a meat loaf in the slow cooker by putting it in a loaf tin and then pouring boiling water around it - so it looks as if the above idea should work."This site is addictive!"

That was me
I've used a smaller pyrex casserole in the slow cooker and it worked fine, don't forget to put some hot water in the base of the cooker so it isn't cooking dry.0 -

i have used this method (thanks) too..even with my 3.5L SC ....just put plenty of water around . Works great for smaller amounts, I often cook for 2.0 -
Hello all,
Apologies if there is already a thread that answers these, I know there are the recipes in the index.
Inspired by these recipes, I had a vague idea that I owned a slow cooker! La Redoute sent me a smallish one as a free gift about three years ago but I just assumed it was mainly for meat dishes (I only eat fish) and so I never even unwrapped it and it has lived in the back of my cupboard. Reading the veggie recipes on here made me dig it out but as it was free, the instructions are basic to say the least (ie switch it on. Switch it off. Do not touch hot plate. etc!)
So,
Is it safe to leave on unsupervised all day whilst I'm out at work or asleep? I'm guessing this is kind of the point of these things, but I'm a born worrier.
It has five settings, do I use the lowest or what?
And finally, are they energy efficient, it feels wrong to leave something switched on all day?!
I'm a bit confused so all you slow cooker experts please helpThanks in advance.
