£13 for two pairs of prescription glasses Deals Discussion

  • Don't touch them with the proverbial barge pole. I ordered some rimless reading glasses in November at a price of £109 and had to send them back when they arrived in December as they would only focus 8 inches from my eyes(note there was no second pair with this purchase). To be fair they accepted them back without a quibble and replaced them at no further cost to me. The new pair arrived in January 2010 and I wore them on a daily basis until 19 June 2010, replacing them into the case when they were not required for reading. On 19 June I took them out of the case as usual moving the arms to the open position and found that I had the left arm in one hand and the remainder of the frame and the right arm in the other hand - and nothing in between. For a split second I assumed that the screw holding the arm to the frame must have fallen out until I looked down and realised that a piece of the lens measuring a centimetre was still attached to the left arm so there was no screw missing just a broken lens and a sharp piece of glass attached to an arm.

Spoke to the service department straight away and the lady asked if they were rimless. When I said they were she said this had happened before but to send them back with a prepaid label she would email to me.
This was going to be an inconvenience but I had my previous prescription glasses as a back up so couldn't get too upset about it. Then the shock when I received an email saying they had received my glasses back and as long as I sent them £67.50 they would repair them!
To cut a long story short I told them that I did not believe that I should have to pay for glasses that were less than 6 months old and unless they replaced them free of charge I would be taking them to the Small Claims Court. With no response from them I made the same threat for the second time and finally received my glasses back last week without further charge. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WOULD I DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY AGAIN.

I am surprised that MoneySavingExpert has not done it's homework with regard to this offer.
VisionSavingExpert would like to point out that these frames are of extremely low quality and come from unknown factories in the Far East. They would certainly not pass any accepted standards. Also and more importantly, the lenses used are NOT the same as those used at registered optometrists. Never has there been a better example of 'you get what you pay for'.

OcularHealthSavingExpert would also like to point out that whilst MoneySavingExpert might promote FREE SIGHT TESTS it should make people aware that these tests are NOT suitable for the detection of early signs of sight-threatening eye disease.

It's a bit late in the evening now, and I'll reply more fully tomorrow morning but just to address these two points quickly:

@julianhodgearepants: I'm really sorry you've had this experience. I don't think, as a company representative on these forums, I can send or receive private messages, but I'd really like to look into this and see what happened. It sounds like something went wrong somewhere. I'll try and figure out a way tomorrow of getting in touch as I'm keen this doesn't happen again.

@FCOptom: Your name and tone suggests a very strong bias against our business which I totally understand. Virtually nothing in your message is accurate, and I'll reply more fully first thing tomorrow morning.

I hate to say it FCOptom, but I agree with the Glasses Direct chappie.

FREE SIGHT TESTS it should make people aware that these tests are NOT suitable for the detection of early signs of sight-threatening eye disease.

    Can soemone clarify.

My understanding is that the free sight tests offered by the likes of Dolland and Aitchison (I'm not advertising just one I've used) are exactly the same as the ones you pay for.

    Can someone confirm or deny?

If they aren't the same then that's easy, I'll get my employer to pay instead. But having been through it I don't think there is any difference.

Any free eye tests I have had have always been the same as any paid for eye test I have had. That said, the free tests I have had have been from the likes of Boots and D&A.

I have a friend who always paid for eye tests from a reputable optician, went to a different one for some reason, and they discovered he had a serious problem that must have been there for years, never once did his now ex-optician spot the problem.

I suspect the person that posted that is an optician, or someone in that trade, with a bee in his bonnet because everyone has rebelled after realising they no longer have to pay rip-off prices for glasses.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
  • I've used Glasses Direct for the past two years and always been really happy with them. Quality specs and fast delivery .... hassle free what more can I say. As a working mother with 4 children (plus one husband) I couldn't ask for anything more. :)
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

I live in Scotland and recently got a free eye test from Boots.

I am now concerned did they do a good job. I am sure they did as I was in a while. Tho, when I left I felt under pressure to buy glasses from them - I didn't, as I can't afford to buy two pairs (one for reading and one for distance). I have bought this offer and hope to buy one of each tonight - I know I will have to pay extra if I want tints, etc.

But for in the meantime £13 for two pairs of glasses will do me fine.

    Kind wishes

As I said before, your message is virtually entirely innaccurate
    • GD has been working with most of its frames suppliers for over 5 years, and every product that we sell is quality checked by us and CE approved. In addition to frames that we buy ourselves, we sell designer frames from over 60 different brands – all of which are certified as genuine product.
    • Our lenses are *exactly* the same as those used by the rest of the optical industry.
    • All our authorisation, fulfilment, lens cutting and fitting are done in our own laboratory by our own staff in the UK or by external UK laboratories which are otherwise used by high street and independent opticians.
    • If anyone is unhappy with their order, they have 14 days to return it for a full refund or replacement.

As for your comment on eye tests, I think that is trying to worry people unnecessarily without any evidence or backup, but as we don't perform eye tests it's not for me to comment.

While Glasses Direct do not carry out sight tests and therefore this is comment is not relevant to us, our qualified opticians felt it essential to point out the inaccuracy of this final comment.

Within the UK sight testing is regulated by law under the opticians act and can only be carried out by a registered optometrist, ophthalmologist or doctor to certain standards defined by the General Optical Council.

Therefore there is no evidence to suggest that a free sight test would be of any lesser quality than one for which a customer is charged.

A sight test has to be carried out to the same standards and by opticians qualified to the same level regardless of cost. We would also point out that the optician is required by law to issue a written prescription.
