    Hello everyone

Just de-lurking to ask what is the best way to reheat things ? For example Shirl may have frozen her Bacon and Onion pudding and will need to know how to reheat on the day. Will she need to steam it again IYSWIM ?

    Great job everyone.

Wow allegra that's a heck of a list to get done, no offence intended so please don't my comments personally.
If i (as shirley) looked at that list i would run like the wind and say no chance.
Also if they have a lack of storage space it just wouldn't work.
    Allegra wrote: »
Batch Cooking Day 1 (before you start)

Soak chickpeas the night before (brilliant, that way they can be frozen for later in the month!) )
    Bread x 2
    Apple Curd
    Houmus
Nut Butter x 2 (i would personally only do one of these)
    Tangy Bean Pate x 2
(i would personally only do one of these)
Liver pate (to freeze) (Do it later in the month, say week 3, along with the tangy bean pate and nut butter)
    Grate cheese
    Slice bacon
    Chop onion
    Onion tart x2
    Carrot cake
(Do it later in the month and say freeze orange carcass)
Marmalade(Do it later in the month )
    Mayo
    Savoury scones (optional)
    Raisin scones
    (optional)
    Savoury bites(optional)

Essentials: Bread, spreads (apart from liver pate), one carrot cake and a snack. The rest can be made throughout the week to spread the load. Mayo does not keep well, so make it when you fancy eating it. If you only make 1 batch of bread, you will need to make another on Thursday.

Batch cooking Day 2 (end of first week)

Soak marrowfat peas the night before
Poach chicken, portion up, make stock
Chicken and onion pie x 2
    Bread x 2
Pea and apple soup x 3 (move to week 2)
Potato and onion soup x 3 (do one batch when its needed in week 4)
    HM pizza x 3
Bacon and onion pudding x 2 (just do one)
    Savoury scones
    (optional)
    Biscuits(optional)
    Tomato scones(optional)
    Carrot cake (optional)
Breakfast pancakes x 2 (do one batch when its needed in week 4)

Essentials: chicken, stock, soups and pies - if you are short of freezer space, just make what you'll eat on the day for soups as they are easy enough to prepare from scratch every time you have them. One batch of bread - you can make another on Thursday; bacon and onion puddings (unless you have a free day for steaming them on Monday)

Batch Cooking Day 3 (end of second week)

    Bread x 3
    Carrot cake
    Bean curry x 3
(do one batch when its needed)
    Amatriciana x 3
    Savoury scones
    (optional)
    Raisin scones(optional)
    Savoury bites(optional)
    Biscuits(optional)

Essentials: Bread. although if you only make one batch, you'll need to make another on Tuesday, and yet another on Friday. As all the other dishes are easy to prepare from scratch on the night if necessary, try to get ahead on the bread and on snacks if you can. Also if you've only made one batch of bean pate and nut butter, and not made the liver pate as yet, now is the good time to do so.

Batch Cooking Day 4 (end of week 3)
    Bread x 2
(put the pates and marmalade in this week)
    Carrot cake
    Veggie Burgers
    Tomato Scones
    (optional)
    Raisin scones(optional)
    Savoury bites(optional)

Essentials: Bread. You can make another batch on Thursday; ditto for carrot cake. Veggie burgers can be prepared on Tuesday just make sure you can allow sufficient time for them to rest in the fridge. If you finish work late, consider preparing them the night before and leaving in the fridge overnight.

Batch Cooking Day 5 (end of week four)

    Bread
    Savoury scones
    (optional)
    Raisin scones(optional)
    Tomato scones(optional)
Make a start on next month's food

I think the main thing is to spread it out more throughout the month., For instance i couldn't make all of the above in that order and freeze it. As i don't have the space, also Shirley might in the position.
Could also be a good idea to write optional next the snacks e,g scones, as they might be full to the gills from the meal plan.

Again please don't be offended my comments as they are not directed to you personally in any way.

    hiya kez :) Thanks :D

What were you thinking shirl will do for snacks in week one though?

I'm worried about hunger pangs! I mean if she doesn't make any of them... I love your attention to detail and concern for shirl :)

I agree some things could potentially be moved from the week one list, but it is definitely worth making more than one bacon and onion pudding at one go because the steaming does take a long time.

Twinkle, all help gratefuly received :) I am very happy to put things in the right order, but I will need help - a lot of it - on the exact timings, as I have never been able to do anything uninterrupted, so have only the vaguest idea how long things actually take ! What I am hoping to be able to do is make a rough draft, and then everyone chips and and picks it apart and hopefully makes it foolproof :D How does that sound, everyone ?

Kezlou, no offence taken at all - in fact, your feedback is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for :T So if anyone else has something similar to contribute, but was worried they might hurt my feelings, please please please chip in :D

I do disagree with you on just one issue, Kez, and that's the carrot cake - as it's listed as a snack on each and every day of the plan, it ought to be done before you start, I'd say ;) But again, we won't be there to police Shirl's kitchen, so if she can't be bovvered, good for her :rotfl:

The feedback so far makes me think that different levels is definitely the way to go for - here's what you should do if you shop weekly and haven't got much storage; here's what you should do if you haven't got any time during the week.

I just don't know what to do for a Shirl that has no time and no storage, though :(

    Hi weezl,

I would say make the carrot cake and biscuits or savoury scones. That way if the kids are at school, the food is not going to waste and the snacks will last longer.
Also they could choose between something sweet or savoury.

My main concern is if all the snacks are made in one what if no one like them? It could mean they go hungry anyway and the food is wasted IFSWIM.

Not sure if i've written that right :o.

allegra/kez ok perhaps time for me to attempt to steer things :)

I think we need a batch day guide made as friendly as poss, with suggested timings. BUT, I think we need in big letters at the top:

Please don't be daunted by this list, it's just here to help you. If you would prefer this month just to make a few meals from the planner until you feel more confident, that's great! You'll still save money that way :)

    howzat?

Yes definitely write that on top in big bright letters, that way if anyone can do exactly on the list, then brill. If not they know the plan can still work them.:T
