    I've been Money Tipped!
My bill is working out at about £4 a day, cut the heating through the day in the bedrooms, just put it on at night to warm the rooms up and leave it on, lounge heater on all day and that's it. Roughly about £4 a day. Been using slow cooker on low more too, rather than cooking on stove. Water heater set at 60. Immersion comes on four times a day for about an hour and half/two hours a time. Run fan heater in the bedrooms at night to warm them up, ten minutes or so. Panel heaters in bedrooms don't really give off too much heat.

  • People keep telling me that its more economical to have the heating on at about 17C 24 hours a day even when you are at work because it takes less energy to heat the house up when you get home and it doesn't take much energy to maintain 17C compared to having a cold house when you get home.

I see the theory but I can't really get away from the fact the 17C house is losing heat all day while you are out, seems like a waste to me! Any comments?
  • This very point was raised in a discussion on the Relationships forum very recently and was shot down in flames quite convincingly but I can't remember the details now as it doesn't apply to me as my heating is still OFF. Thermo is now showing a balmy 13 degrees centigrade. Luxury!

    It's a waste.

I've no idea why, but some people really seem to believe this and it constantly comes up again and again.

Heating when you're not there, can never save money.

Anyone who tries it, could be in for an expensive lesson.
  • We still have the heating on constantly.I thought it was getting a bit milder outside so set the timer again to have the heating off when we slept but we woke up to frozen pipes.
I suppose I should take a meter reading and work out how much more it is costing to have the boiler running like this but I am dreading seeing the cost.
I know that in the last 3 weeks we have spent about £60 on logs etc for just the lounge fire.

    Hello,
Mine is on now its warmed up a bit from 6am to 7am and 4pm till 9pm. This is the first month I've lived on my own in a new house so I'm petrified what my first bill is going to be!! I've budgeted £50 per month for gas and electric, I have gas central heating (which does the hot water too) for a small 2 bed cottage and a gas hob.
Got a bit overexcited when it was cold though and had it on lots and lots and lots.
Now quite worried about the first bill!!!

£50pm sounds a tad optimistic for both at this time of year. If you did get carried away with the heating, then gas will probably be around that alone.
  • im paying 90 a month for gas at the moment on pre-payment meter :(
only using 50 for electric though

I tried it.. and learned a very expensive lesson! For my house it didn't work, doubled my usage therefore a nasty bill.

Now we heat the room we're in then pre-heat bathroom and bedrooms ready for use on an evening.

At the moment we have the rads on all night - thermo controlled, but tonight will be going back to timed to come on once at night and before waking.

Last month (lesson learning month!) gas was £125 and electricity was £30
