  • For the last ten years we have almost always had snow on March 1st or during that week. We open the caravan park on 1st March so always remember and so with having two little ones as well i'm not sure we can switch it off then. We have it on almost continuosly (goes off at 8pm) as we also work from home and i can't work when its too cold - so I will look at only having it on certain hours this month and possibly turn it off at the end of the month - see how the weather goes first.

Thanks Caterina, a good thought there :)
I'll give it a go but I htink for me it will be still a bit nippy especially at night.
I'll try switching the morning one off though, and getting dressed a bit quicker

  • How much was your bill if you've been keeping the heating on while you're in bed at night?

My heating been on very, very little over the winter and I assure you that it wasn't through choice although getting up in the morning with the thermostat showing 12 degrees centigrade was pretty brutal but needs must etcetera.

I'm hoping that I wont need to use much more heating now that it feels like spring is just around the corner

With the days getting longer now, we've only been putting the heating on first thing in the morning and in the evening. My DH has been off work and home all day since end Sept, so heating has been on longer than normal. We got cavity wall insulation done last May though and that's made a huge difference to how warm the house has been compared to previous winters, so already reckon that we've saved with that.

Not sure that I could turn it off from 1 March though.....

My thermostat is often on 10/11/12 degrees at the moment (again not through choice) and its bloomin cold. I turn off usually 1st March and leave off till November 1st but am a tad skint so its off most of the time unless i can see my breath in the air lol.

I never switch ours off. It is controlled both by timer and thermostat. There is no need to switch it off as it will only operate when required.

I have never run my heating on the timer or the useless thermostat in the hallway - if I feel cold it goes on and it goes off if I'm not cold, irrespective of time of year. I fine tune the temp by tweaking the thermostat on the boiler.

It just depends on the temperature really. We don't have it coming on/going off automatically, we put it on when we feel cold, then switch off when going out/to bed. We manage without weekday mornings as it is.

We have used a little more gas this year compared to last but hardly suprising considering the winter we are having. Looking forward to spring and lighter evenings.

Why not let the timer and thermostat do the hard work?

We have 5 family birthdays in March ranging from the beginning to the very end so are aware of how much this month varies. My son's on the 4th is cold, far too cold to ever have an outdoor birthday party. On more than one occassion it has snowed on this day. My nan's on the 14th she says she can have the last of the snow on her birthday, though I only remember this happening very occassionally. My neice/nephew (twins) and daughter's are at the end, daughter's on 31st March. I've known this to be a warm spring day. There's a saying that March 'comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb' and my experience is that this is accurate.
