In my slow cooker today...

Hello creased Leach, I've bought one of those (to replace my old one which has a missing handle!) and have got a duck casserole simmering away today, as I'm experimenting with this one.
I cook chilli about once a fortnight, and always use mince with a low fat content. Then I can just chuck it all in, without pre-browning, or having to drain.
Thanks Sublime- I browned the mince this time as it was an unknown quantity- turns out I needn't have bothered though.:o
It's all in now. Stuck it on high for the first hour after remembering it was wednesday- hubby & daughter are off out training- and can't wait to chow down laterOnly dead fish go with the flow...0 -
Pork chops on a bed of carrots, apple, some stuffing mis, and then pork gravy over the top.
Will serve with mashed potato.0 -
I have browned sausages, red onion, garlic, celery, mushrooms, an orange pepper, a crumbled pork stock cube, teaspoon of dried basil and 500 ml of pasata in mine....not a recipe just a 'throw together sausage casserole' so fingers crossed!
edited *added 1/2 tblspn sugar and stirred before serving with mash potatoes - was really lovely!*
Yesterday I had browned mince, chopped onions, fried off bacon cubes, garlic chopped tomatoes, celery, beef stock dried basil dried parley and tomato puree and the resulting bolagnese was lovely!

In my trusty cauldron today, lamb Korma. So, I have cheated a bit and used Pataks Korma paste (enough left for another one).
We bought a vacuum packed leg of lamb from Sainsburys last weekend (£9 - BARGAIN!), and it is going to supply two complete slow cooker meals, with some set aside marinated for kebabs on Friday.
Roughly chop whole large onion.
Add 2 Tsp crushed garlic
Fry til Golden in 1 Tbs sunflower oil
Add meat
Swirl it all around getting the meat coated and then brown.
Add water to deglaze, then transfer to big pot
Put 150g frozen peas and 3 coarsley chopped red peppers to the pan and saute
Get the large pot and add the pan mix to the meat and onions
Add 100ml of single cream to the mix
Add 150ml of low fat Greek yoghurt to the mixture
Add salt, lemon juice, sugar to taste
Chop handful of coriander
Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, and put the slow cooker on for 15 minutes
After 15 minutes transfer the mix to the slow cooker, wash up and tidy away, and have a slurp of 2001 Rioja (£5.99 Sainsburys - BARGAIN)
Go upstairs, to the PC to escape the heat of the genuine "Hells kitchen" and tell everyone about it.
Bye for now,
Andy
I have no connection with Sainsburys, because I am a "supermarket tart", and will source "BARGAIN" food from anywhere.0 -
Still not doing it right. My first attempt was terrible, I added too much water and overcooked the meat. My second and third attempt was just as bad, too little water, overcooked meat and split peas turned into mash. It was just one big blob yuck.
I just need to get the timing rightI can cook, honest :rotfl:

How long did you cook it for, and on what setting. Trial and error with slow cooking. I'm sure your next go will be fine.0 -

"mash" - surely you mean "mushy peas" !! well done! :rotfl::TRelax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. Frugal Living Challenger. No buying cleaning products. I used MSE advice to reduce my car insurance from 550 to 325!! & paid it off in full!!!0 -
Van - I learned a few things when I first started. If you're out all day put it on LOW. With liquid, don't cover everything, as liquid multiplies in the slow cooker!
If doing something like chicken legs expect to be fishing bones out of your casserole.
What slow cooker have you got and what setting have you been using?Wendy x0 -
My SC chicken was amazing! Sui-Generis I hope you read this!
I put it in whole on LOW at 8am today. No liquid, no garlic, onion nor herbs - nuffink.
Came home expecting it to smell a bit pongey as chicken can - but no, the house smelt of roast chicken. Then the miracle - it had browned! It produced some liquid but not lots, not even a centimetre.
I lifted it out with a big meat fork and it promptly carved itself, the meat is wonderful and the kids said its the nicest chicken ever. I'm going to put it in Indian butter chicken later with rice and naan.
Result!Wendy x0
