Can I also ask... you have gone vegan food wise this is what everyone seems to discuss first! But have you gone vegan with beauty/cleaning etc? If so any tips?

I know the Original Source shower gels have the vegan society logo on their packaging, but they can be a bit expensive.

You could always try Ethical Superstore (very good website for Fairtrade, Organics, etc.) but again, things can be a bit expensive - for example, £9.99 (!) for a 125g tub of Body Scrub

EDIT: I've just googled "homemade vegan cleansers" and found a thread on another forum with lots of suggestions on it:

  • Aha, forgot about the Lush bars, Doom and Gloom and kim ley thanks for the tips. I used Lush a few years ago and have always loved it and not sure why I stopped using it really. I agree, I'm not really one to spend a lot of money on myself each month so yes, it would certainly be a justifiable treat and if I only need two a year, I'm laughing:T have just looked on eBay to see if anyone sticks Lush bits and bobs on there:

Haven't got my AFS to hand, but could be worth a look if you see a familiar product on there?

I think eating two dahl's in a row has seriously disagreed with my belly :o

Speaking of 'humane' treatment of animals, isn't it ironic we use a word with 'human' in it to reference to how society treats beings which aren't human. It's quite sad that animals don't have a word - just goes to show how short-sighted/arrogant language can be....

Do remember that not all Lush products are vegan. However if you go on their site or get the ‘Lush Times’ through then you can find out which of their products are vegan easily.
I’ve also got some of their bath bombs, solid deodorant (for when my usual runs out. Can’t remember what it is but was from my local health house when I lived back at the flat last year and was vegan), lip balm, cleanser/exfoliation products. They all last ages which really is amazing. I've had one of their lip balms for a year and there is still a fair amount. Not bad for £4.40 :rotfl: (not sure if any of their lip balms are vegan anymore but you do tend to get more products in store that are not online or in their paper).

My partner who eats ‘meat’ (sorry I do that with that word as I see it as a corps and not a kind of food. I know others won‘t do this though.) calls it an efficient way of killing not humane as there are no humane ways to kill something! It’s the most efficient way possible that causes the least pain possible. However that’s only for those that go through the ‘procedure’ correctly! People need realise there are no humane ways of killing something for their pleasure which basically is what they are doing by raising these animals for ‘meat.’
I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy :D

I also use lush bars and like others have said they last such a long time that they work out just as cheap! Also the original source products are expensive but they always have them in the pound shop, my mum bulk buy's them so they are cheap! As far as cleaning products go I only use bicarb, vinegar, tea tree and lemon. I also use ecover multi surface cleaner diluted in a spray bottle (as it's cheaper than buying their spray cleaner) I have yet to find something that these cannot clean! My one exception to cleaning products is klear, as I have a hideous brown tiled floor that look's filthy even when scrubbed, but klear brings it up nice. Prob vegan?? but not sure on ethics of it. Soon the HBF will be gone though, so will the klear! :D
    Andrina-N- thanks for the linky!

Also- I do sometimes eat things which say may contain traces as I think co. have to be so overcautious due to litigation that they have to put this on, even if made in the same line, bit like the nut's too. I was just seeing what others thought. Like somebody else said depends how far you take it. I will also be buying my DD leather shoes when she is walking properly (only cruising atm) as most clarks (gotta be fitted :)) are, and I feel it is the best thing for little ones, rather than plastic.

hi guys i've managed to find a recipe for shampoo & conditioner...
it's not a bar but i'm not sure if anyone wants to play around with it and make it solid???????

    Herbs for dry hair
Comfrey, avocado, elder flowers, orange blossom, burdock root, horsetail

    Herbs for oily hair
Nasturtium flowers, strawberry leaves, lemon grass, rosehip, white willow bark, sage

    Herbs for normal hair
Clover, horsetail, nettle, lavender, rosemary, marigold

    Herbs for ethnic hair
Cherry bark, olive leaves, comfrey root, nettle, thyme, juniper

    Herbs for dandruff
Comfrey, nettle, peppermint, white willow bark, birch, colts foot, sage, chestnut

    Herbs for manageability
Cherry bark, hops, sage leaves, burdock root, lavender flowers

Herbs for conditioning and highlighting fair hair
Marigold flowers, chamomile flowers, nettle, rhubarb root, safflower, mullein flowers

Herbs for conditioning and accentuating dark hair
Bay leaves, black walnut hulls, burdock root, nettle, quassia bark, cloves, cinnamon

    Gentle Mom & Baby-safe shampoo
    1 ounce chopped soapwort root
    10 ounces Distilled water
2 tablespoons fresh herb choice for hair type (1 tablespoon if dried)
    1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon (each) castor and wheat germ cold pressed oil
6 drops (your choice) essential oil.

In a stainless steel or Pyrex pan, simmer the soapwort pieces in the distilled water for 10-15 minutes. Remove from the heat, and add the herb. Let it stand for 10 more minutes. Strain through a fine mesh. Pour into a glass jar, with fitted lid. Add the salt, cold pressed oils, and essential oils, then shake well. Refrigerate between uses. Shake well before each use. Use daily on warm, wet hair. For baby, remove shampoo from the refrigerator, 1 hour before use, so that it is room temperature before application.

    Conditioning Treatment:
    Dandruff-away conditioner
Half ounce each of the following herbs:
Coltsfoot, white sage, peppermint leaves, white willow bark
1/2 teaspoon, cold pressed castor oil
1/2 teaspoon, cold pressed walnut oil
    8 ounces cider vinegar
1 ounce 100-proof vodka (light hair) or brandy (dark hair)

All herbs must be fresh (or wild craft dried, halve the amount for dried herbs), free from pesticides and always organically grown. In a wide mouthed glass (dark colored) jar, pour in the vinegar and alcohol. Chop or crush the herbs and place into the jar. Seal and shake well. Leave in a dark cupboard for 10 days to macerate, shaking daily. Strain through a fine mesh discarding the herbs, and pour liquid back into the bottle. Add the oils and shake again. This recipe does not require refrigeration, it will keep at room temperature for at least 2-3 weeks. For best results, use daily for one week.

I found this on a website about veggie/vegan pregnancy!?
I'm going to try it when I cat time but if anyone makes before me let me know.

My mum swears by a product called Pierre d'argent for tiles and the bits between she has a limestone floor and a ceramic sink and they look cleaner today than they did 5 years ago!!

  • Another vote for lush products, everything is labled so you can tell quickly if something is vegan (all veggie and low/no chemicals).

I also really like faith in nature products, especially shampoo and conditioner very gentle and lasts a long time.

Lavera do a suncream which i sometimes use as a moisturiser lasts really well and a lovely smell.

Barry M dazzel dust and lip gloss are also vegan. (and nailpolish I think)

Like beauty without cruelty for make-up (not too expesive)

I will eat foods that say may contain traces of ... like I would eat vegan food my mum cooks (she is omni) as things are cleaned in between. For me this is where I draw the line as I can manage without chocolate. :)

    Hello all!

Am amazied at having so many responses and congratualtions and yay for all the vegans appearing from the woodwork. And Weezl, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek. I'm starstruck! :j Hope the bambino is growing well. :D
Ceridwen - i did wonder if it was that particular brand of rice milk. Might try some different ones in the future. Do you have any suggestions?
HelenYorkshire - my mum told me about almond milk but haven't been able to find anywhere yet. Hope its as yummy in other things!
Greenbee - i hope my storecupboards will one day be as varied as yours!
Sam37 & fraxxmunch thanks for the congrats and advice.

Well, after the milk testing I was a bit full but have managed two bowls of homemade minestrone soup and some wholemeal bread. Being vegan certainly means I'm eating more!

Nope - 'fraid not - Rice Dream is t'only brand of rice milk that I found palatable personally - but I not only found this palatable - but liked it.

I know this might sound daft but I am a new vegan and am wondering if hot cross buns are safe to eat as OH has left a pack in the kitchen and they are a favourite of mine.

I nearly forgot to add, I use www.greenpeople.co.uk for some toiletries/face creams etc their products are really good, not very cheap but they do last a long time and have no nasty chemicals in.
