Already run defraggler! Rather than use msconfig, can I use CCleaner?

You could possibly use ccleaner, but I prefer to do it manually. Ccleaner may uncheck things you want starting up. It is very easy to do, and if you don't feel confident in doing it, you can always cancel at any stage.

You may want to do a defrag after you've done all the above in my list though.

    CCleaner is fine.

You go to tools, startup and remove the programs from the startup list you don't want starting up.

Defragging should make the computer overall faster.
    Upgrade RAM- should be easy.
If the worse gets to the worse, reinstall XP.

Thanks for advice. Have rebooted and seems much quicker!!!

Have disabled programs suggested from start-up (with the exception of anydvd). I have Clonedvd so does anydvd not need to be running in the background?!?

Also, is there an idiots guide on how to remove/add memory?!?

steve, I doubt if you need either of those two running on startup.

memory adding guide...search youtube for an instructional video clip, dead easy ;)

basically, take the side panel off you case so you can see the motherboard, (hoover all the accumulated dust out of it !! there will be loads), locate the memory slot, plug in your stick (remove the existing one if needs be), ensure it's in properly (will only fit one way round)and ensure the tabs at either end of the socket swing up and click into place on the new stick, et voila !!

I'd go with the 3200, though you may find a better price elsewhere.

The question was to the OP.

It's recommending either the 2700 or the 3200.

Dull question but I've disabled a load of programs in CCleaner. Do I also need to delete them from startup now?!?

Shouldn't do if you have done it in CCleaner, but if you go to start, click run, then type msconfig, click on startup tab, all the programs due to start will be ticked.

    No, you don't.

Go ahead and purchase the PC2700 that I have provided. There is no need to pay Crucial six pounds more.

Myself for the extra £1, I'd have gone for the 3200.
