Anyone used this granite worktop company?

Hi, I am looking at getting a granite worktop supplied and fitted and have had a flyer from Universal Granite Uk through the letter box offering a great knock down price but wondered if anyone had used this company and could recommend them?

I've seen a few people on this site say they used

    http://www.diapol.co.uk/default.asp

and found them to be very good. Maybe try a search on the forum for related posts.

Beware of cheap imported granite from you guessed it CHINA. it is a low grade and normally dyed, you will only find out when drainer grooves start going white. Granite is a porous material and you cannot put anything acidic on it i.e. lemon juice, dont use abrasive cleaners or put a hot pan striaght on to the granite, use a trivett

excuse my ignorance what is a Trivett ?
    It's nice to be Important

But It's Important to be nice
  • A trivett is like a coaster but larger and for pans tea pots etc, it might be spelt differently though.

I'd compare prices with www.diapol.com as their quoting system is exactly what they use to calculate your final price. Ours was only a tiny way off and that was through my rough measuring than them ripping us off. I found them to be very good value indeed, especially when compared to the kitchen showrooms.

Yes, I have used Diapol. They were great and fantastic value. The granite I needed was quite a complicated shape, but I found the company to be extremely helpful and the price to be far lower than all the other quotes I got.

The online quote should be accurate unless you add on extras when it comes down to it like I did.

It's funny how the people promoting Polar Stone and Universal Granite and their web sites tend to be new members here and only want to talk about granite ....

I don't like web sites which don't give you an address. With granite, it's much better if you can go and look at the actual slab they're going to use for your kitchen. Mind you ... Diapol don't give an address either and they seem to be ok. I use Impala Stone in Kirk Langley ... but they have a showroom and they're good rather than cheap.

Oh and beware of anyone who tells you that lemon juice will attack granite - it won't - unless it's really bad quality granite. Testing a sample with lemon juice is one of the ways to tell.

I tried Polar Stone last month. It soon became apparent that it was a one man band, not that I have an issue with that. But after agreeing a price which was very good value 10% cheaper than the competition I waited for the template service. I was let down three times before never hearing from them again! I was left with a fitted kitchen and no work tops. It was bizzare and I was really angry at the time. I had been in contact with them for months and when it came time to fit the granite they just ignored me and let me down. I used Mr marble in the end, they were more expensive but turned up and fitted the granite.
