ripped packaging am i justified to be disappointed

I have won some baby bedding on ebay recently. Two parcels from different sellers have wrapped in brown paper and have been ripped in the post.
Whose fault is this. The first parcel had been rebagged by royal mail but the paper was hanging off. I was disaapointed to find this and gave a neutral score on feedback for postage and packing. The seller mailed me and said they were upset that i scored them neutral. I don’t know if i have been unreasonable but i didn’t want to find my bedding wet or dirty. I have ordered other this in the past from business sellers who package in plastic. Would it not be better to use this sort of packaging.
Should I apologise to the seller for leaving neutral score. I still have to leave feedback for the other seller whose parcel was also ripped.
thanks

It all depends - if they used strong brown parcel paper, then I would be annoyed with the postal service. Some people don't like packing in plastic for environmental reasons. I would always use some sort of plastic just to keep things dry, but that's my own preference.
Mind you, I'd be washing any sort of bedding, wherever I'd bought it from, before use anyway, so a bit damp probably wouldn't bother me.0 -
Brown paper is not really a suitable material for a modern day postal service. I would expect some sort of plastic or at least rain and rip proof outer covering.
The packaging was ripped so you are perfectly entitled to raise that as an issue with a seller who will hopefully reconsider their future packaging.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. soft item
brown paper
you grab the packet out a york trolley and it tears
then as it goes through the sorting it rips more0 -
I would contact the seller first & let them know that the packaging was ripped.
If they are personal sellers & don't sell lots on ebay then they probably think that parcel paper is suitable for wrapping parcels. They probably just didn't think about the many processes it has to go through to get to you & that soft items have lots of give in them.
They may think that brown paper looks better than sticking it into a plastic carrier.0 -
As above I wouldn't use brown paper for a soft item, I only use it on boxed goods.
As it is if it got there not damaged I wouldn't mark them down but notify them of what had happened.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

only ever had brown paper on the likes of dvd's
i normally wrap in bubble wrap (Doesnt matter what the item is) the over that i put a black bin bag which wraps round 2 or 3 times normally then parcel tape.. never had any buyer complain about ripped packaging..
generally i box most things i sell ( mainly large car items) in a double walled box.
although i did get a "complaint" that it took them 10 mins to undo all the packaging i put on a car part . all be it a jokey complaintSealed pot challenger # 10

thanks for replies. i may reply to first seller and point out constructively that brown paper is not strong enough. It was only thin paper so could easily rip without too much abuse. The second seller I wont score yet but i will let them know the same and see what repsonse i get. Of course i would wash the bedding before use but you dont want a soggy mess turning up on your doorstep if you have paid postage and packing costs.0

Before leaving feedback I would have contacted the seller to tell them about the ripped packaging. If the item was boxed then brown paper would be ok, bagged then use a bag. I have seen the royal mails way they throw things about and how things get trapped on a conveyor. To be honest they do not care much, but some sorters are better than others.Lifes a !!!!! and then you marry one:D0 -

do you have experience of working under timed sorting?0 -
Surely with the amount of items that are sorted in a shift RM don't have the time to treat each parcel gently.
As users of the service we should be taking care with packaging, so that it's fit to be thrown around & go on conveyor belts.0
