Hi,
My Mum is my Nan's carer. My Nan also currently has carers who come 4 times a day just to change her. My Mum is trying to find out if my Nan is being charged the right amount for the carers. She pays £830 a month. They only started charging about 10 months ago. My Nan owns the house. Currently almost all the money my Nan receives goes straight back out to cover the care costs. She has less than £1000 in her bank account and my Mum is worried what this means. I keep finding different info as to whether the house is taken into account or not when calculating how much she needs to pay towards care. My Mum keeps calling people but they haven't been any help and keep forwarding her to different people. The carers have told my Mum that they visit a couple who both work full time and don't have to pay anything. It's confusing what the criteria is and how they calculate this. We live in Tower Hamlets, London.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

This explains how they work out a client's contributions -

For home carers, the value of the house isn't taken into account.0 -
The LA should have done a financial assessment of her income and savings, the value of the home should be excluded. She should have a social worker appointed to her, and he / she should be your first point of call. If you do not know who that is the following link should be useful.

Does your Nan get Attendance Allowance?
https://www.gov.uk/attendance-allowance
My 90 year old Mum was recently awarded this at the lower rate. She does not have any carers coming in. It's not means tested and is payable monthly into the bank.
It's worth checking out.0 -
Laura - have you been able to sort this out?0

So who set up the carer arrangement? If it was the SW, he/she should have done a financial assessment to work out your Nan's contribution.LauraBubbles1995 wrote: »Unfortunately not.
Have you tried AgeUK or CAB?
I know both organisations are very busy but it does sound as if your Nan is being grossly overcharged.0 -
Agree with ^^^ and I would advise AGE UK0
