One week from tomorrow I will be in Vegas.:j :j
Thank you Trets, Ferf and Photome for all your invaluable help in planning this trip. As you know we used miles and money fare with Virgin £140 plus taxes. Treasure Island, Excalibur have both honoured their reduced prices. Friend is getting married on the monday staying at Venetian and remainder of guests according to their own budget are spread amongst Pallazzo,Venetian, Circus Circus, Treasure Island and Excalibur. My only worry is that I will not have enough money to pay for food and hopefully a bit of gambling. I only have about $1000 to cover this for 2 of us, plus we would like to do the Grand Canyon. Do you think this is enough?
    Thank you all once again

I forget how long you are staying? And we're shortly behind you - Tuesday week. :)

Regardless how long you are going I would consider treating the Grand Canyon trip separate from your spending money if you can but that's just me...ultimately you should bring what you are happy with spending/losing. You can spend as little or as much in Vegas as you want there's such a wide range of options for pretty much everything.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Not far behind you either, 2 weeks yesterday for me
Forgotten how long you are going, but $1000 isnt much (less than £500). You can make it go further if you get the American casino guide and or Las Vegas advisor pov, the cost (for both $54) is easily returned with all the 2 for 1 buffet coupons and there are loads of free mags available ..Whats On has lots of coupons in it. Certainly doesnt leave you much for shopping, gambling and your GC trip if you are there more than a few days??

we booked to go to vegas stopping at the mgm grand 2 weeks from 3rd june 08

1st time in vegas so really looking forward to it thx to so many who contributed to our choice
Did you book hotel seperately? If you did it would be my advice to change hotels during your stay, In a 2 week period I stay in 3 , the MGM is so big you may get fed up with walking just to the strip from the shops at the back of the MGM (inside) it is nearly a mile to the front entrance. Once on the strip the hotels may look close together but once you start walking you will soon realise ther are not.

You also would get to experience diff hotels and areas of the strip with less walking, and you could save money using fatwallet etc to find best deals during your 2 weeks there.

Vegas exists to take your money . no other place i have been too is so good at doing it. that said you can live the high life or you can with a little work make your money go a long way.

food is where you can find some huge price swings. trying some of the better bargain buffets , and good value meal deals can save you big , while eating pretty well. lif you have a desire to eat at a certain place , why not have lunch instead of dinner , to save some $$$. cheap eating is where the Las vegas advisor book of Values can really start to save you big!!!

    http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/whyjoin-pocketbookofvalueslist2008.cfm

( please note folks that Bally's Big Kitchen buffet has now closed forever !!!!)

using the Duece for travel needs ,can save $$$ as can venturing downtown and out of the big casinos for your drinks and nightlife . Casino Royal for example has $1 bottled beers all day everyday.

Big shows cost big bucks , but there is plenty of good shows that can be had for less than $40. for example Mac king at Harrahs costs a mere $10 with a drink thrown in when you join Harrahs players club and it wipes the floor with some big production show i have seen . there are other good afternoon shows that can be had for bargain prices like Dirk Arthur at Tropicanna . if you want evening shows get your self down to the half price ticket outlets , you will certainly find something to your taste ,

The Grand canyon is probably not going to be achievable on your budget. $400 per person is probably going to be around the best price , unless you actually travel out to the Canyon by road and then catch a helicopter

but all said and done , nothing will eat you money like gambling will . if you really want to get the most bang for your buck , head to places like the Stratosphere and downtown , where the limits are lower and the payouts better.

have a great trip let us know all about it when you get back

Thanks for all your replies we are going for a week.
Having read your comments OH is now going to pay for the Grand Canyon trip on his credit card and I have already prebooked and paid for Mystere. I guess what I am now really saying is $1000 enough for eating and general spending, I don't think we will be doing much gambling, or buying clothes as budget doesn't stretch to it.
    Thanks Tasha

I think $1000 will be fine, especially if you're not going to gamble much. Of course you can spend big in Vegas, but you can do it without breaking the bank too.

You can get the American Casino guide from Amazon or other booksellers. The POV is only available from LasVegasAdvisor.com but can be collected when you get there if you are going very soon. Be aware that most of the coupons are for off strip properties though.
