The gp won't give ovulation enhancing drugs without a referral to a fertility specialist as there are checks that need to be done. Before I was referred my husband had to have a sperm analysis as there is no point referring for treatment if there is a problem there.
Once your friend has as appointment with a fertility specialist she will need blood tests to check hormone levels and ensure that they are normal. So not sure the extent that he will be involved. Would the GP refer without the husband? He did know the first time she went to the fertility clinic (when she was stood up) but he made an excuse for not going. TBH its more likely that its her anyway (In view of the periods)0 -
Hi snowbird, welcome to the thread. I'm afraid it isn't that simple (If only it was!). It sounds strange that your friend would be able to go straight to a fertility clinic to see a doctor and them just not turn up - are you in the UK? You can go to a fertility clinic for a general look around (but you won't see a doctor) otherwise you need a GP referral unless you are paying privately of course.
At the moment you have no idea whether she has PCOS. If she is having irregular periods then it is definitely a possibility but not definite. My cousin had regular periods but her result showed she wasn't ovulating, and thus was diagnosed with PCOS.
Your friend needs to tell the GP that she has been trying to conceive for 3 years with no luck. The GP will be able to order blood tests to check your friends hormone levels at day 1-5 and then day 21 (this one checks whether ovulation has taken place). However the day 21 is based upon a typical 28 day cycle so will need adjusting accordingly for your friends cycle length, it wll make it more difficult to check if her cycles are irregular. After this the GP may then consider a referral to a fertility specialist.... this can take a few weeks to go through. Once with the fertility specialists the process can be quick for some or long for others. My friend has been with her local hospital fertility team for 12 months and so far has only had investigatory tests - it all depends on your personal circumstances.
It is all abit 'muddy' sadly. Fingers crossed you can help your friend communicate effectively with the GP. if this one if unsympathetic then I would suggest seeing another one!0 -
You are right. I have no idea she has not POCS. But in view of the periods, and she also has an underactive thyroid which apparently can cause ovulation problems. It seems likely. Apparently she has been referred to the fertility specialist but when she got there no one turned up. They said they would phone to make another appointment but no one phoned up. The nurse at the GP told her that there was nothing she could do about it, and anyway she was too young to start a family. She has plenty of time. I may just get the appointment card from the specialist and try to rearrange it. She is too nervous to do that herself. She did not think it was allowed.

What an unsympathetic nurse! I suspect the nurse wouldn't be able to do anything about though, as it is a GP that needs to make the referral. I think you going with her may be the best idea as it is a sensitive and technical topic it is hard enough to understand when you understand fully, so it must be so difficult for her if she doesn't fully understand english. I also believe that if you don't speak english very well you can request a translator when visiting the GP? I think it is a company the GP can call and put on speakphone to translate between the two parties (just incase this is something she can arrange for future visits!)0

Her own mother lives thousands of miles away and is telling her that everyone is asking when she will have a baby and she needs to get on with it. Her mother in law is a virtual hermit and wont go out. Her husband does not want her talking to his sister in laws. He works all hours and he says he is too tired to go to the hospital and anyway if it is what god wants........
I am thinking it might be better to try to resurrect the fertility clinic appointment. But I need her reference numbers etc. Hopefully she has kept them.
She said the nurse was calling her a liar because she said she had only been trying since december. I know she would not lie. Its just got lost in translation.

Oh yes I agree she definitely needs a friend! I just mean for future for anything else she may need to see the Doctor for or for any fertility appointments you may not be able to attend with her (as she may need to have many).0

I'm pretty sure we've missed fertile week this month, we BDed on cd12 and I ovulate on cd14 ish, so I'm not holding out much hope for this month.
We've just got back from our first outing in our campervan, it was lovely. Parking up in the middle of nowhere, bbq, peace & quiet no phone signal. I didn't want to come home Haha.

I'm still here, had a crappy month, came down with viral tonsillitis start of may, I'm still experiencing pain and discomfort when I swallow now so booked in to see the dr this morn and hope that they can sort it!
Unfortunately fertile week fell just after the tonsillitis and I barely had the energy to eat never mind bd
we managed a couple times but I'm not getting my Hope's up tbh. Due on anytime between fri-Sunday this week....

I think we missed ovulation also! I had plans to BD one night but I was so exhausted I was in bed and fell asleep not long after 8.30am, and then had my ovulation pains the next morning - doh! We BD that night but I reckon it was too late, then OH went off on a stag do for a couple of days.
I am CD 24 now and had a little blood when I've wiped a few times over the last few days which is unusual. Although we have been away and I've got friends who say that going on a plane always messes with their AF. AF isn't due for another week or so but I won't be surprised if she comes early.0
