If you're aquaplaning, you're riding on a sheet of water and the engine speeds up the tyres speed up thus the aquaplaning is maintained and you can travel quite a distance while aquaplaning. Imagine this on a bend. With most drivers I would imagine they wouldn't know the point they start aquaplaning and would tend to over-correct making things worse. Is cruise control really designed for UK motorways? On the M25, M6 and M3, which generally have heavy traffic, I'm generally pumping accelerator, brake, clutch too often for CC to be of any use.

I take it that this originated in the States, home of litigious buyers and abdicators of personal responsibility?
There was a time when cruise was very basic and, with the right set of circumstances, this maybe could have happened. However nowadays, with driver aids the car was probably dangerously out of control (if not knowingly to Shawanda while she was texting and feasting on her McDs while "driving" at 70) before the car hit the standing water.
  • Cobblers. I use CC as much of the time as I can, in all weathers excluding lying snow. Have done so for at least the last ten years and ~300,000 miles (so probably at least 100K using CC) and not once has it caused my car to 'take off like an airplane (aeroplane)'.

In fact, not once has it caused me in any way to feel unsafe or out of control.

CC is all about how you use it, and as already said, when it's in use you still need to concentrate in the same way as when it's not.

But the Police Officer told her that if the cruise control is on,your car will begin to hydro-plane when the tires lose contact with the road, and your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane.
    Really?......

Does this only happen to Americans whos destiny is in the hands of the Lord.

Does this not all depend where the speed sensor is? surely if the sensor is on the driven axle, it will think you are doing the required speed, and not try to accelerate?

  • Probably as "urban legend" as the alleged septic who bought a new Winnebago, set the cruise control and got up from the driver seat to then make a cup of coffee, needless to say the vehicle left the road and the incumbent then allegedly sued Winnebago as the owner manual didn't say that you couldn't leave the seat when cruise control was set.
  • Sorry OP but this fails the 'is this nonsense' test;

    Posted on Facebook? Usually nonsense
Does it end with 'this could save lives/kittens/children? Usually nonsense
Is there anyway of easily verifying the original story? If not, its nonsense
Does it contain things that are a physical impossibility? Definitely nonsense.

    So basically its nonsense.

    Hope that helps
  • Where I think it could happen is in a situation where you have been running under cruise control and have slowed for traffic which kicks out the CC. If you then wish to drive to the previous speed and press the "resume button" the car will accelerate at max. to regain it's previous speed in the shortest time (or at least my Volvo used to ). Never use CC now !

I presume you're in the outside lane trying to go as quick as poss? In that sense you are right that standard (non radar assisted) CC is pointless, on a busy motorway i may just sit on inside lane matching lorry speed on cruise if im not in a rush.

On the broader point, in the owners manuals of all cars ive had with CC it says to not use it in heavy rain or icy conditions, as long as you are sensible and sensitive to road conditions im not sure it's something to get freaked out about...

Just had a post on my Facebook,

Sounds plausible but I had never heard this before and as it was a repost by someone who could be considered a bit gullible and known to repost any and everything without checking it out I did a quick google and it appears true.

    http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/wetroad.asp

    http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/cruisecontrol.htm#.U-MkuPldWtM

Is this common knowledge that has somehow bypassed me or not?

I think the underlying principle is "adjust your speed for the conditions". IF that accident did occur it was because she was driving too fast for the conditions, NOT specifically because she had cruise control on.
