Speeds haven't increased. The averages have changed due to more people moving to fibre.

If only I could get anywhere near 50Mb with fibre.

A maximum of 12Mb with FTTC is almost good enough for my needs but I do resent having to pay the same price for it than someone getting much higher speeds.

The cost of provisioning the service is the same, irrespective of what your line will support, so you pay the same.

While more fibre helps speed the highest packages themselves are also faster on average. VM have launched higher speeds, BT have been offering free uplifts on their 40/10 or 55/10 to 80/20 all push the averages up.

True, and Sky dropped their 38Mbps and pushed everyone on to the higher speed (where available).

You would really resent paying the same for 2Mb then ! OFCOM crow on about how they have given those that already have a good speed even more whilst failing to ensure many can get get even a basic service.

Or putting it another way I am paying for lack of investment in my line even though I live in a built up area within the M25.

I used to get just over 2Mb with ADSL so 12Mb with Fibre was a big improvement but I had to pay for it.
