Yeah I have an overdraft, it won't cover this expense, and I can't get a larger one because I only have one entry on my credit record - £250 owed to Virgin which I didn't know about. I mentioned all that previously. You're not helpful and I am so disappointed in the quality of replies.

To the one person who gave a helpful reply re: credit cards. Just checked and I'm not eligible for a money transfer card. I'm 95% eligible for Vanuis, Aquis and Chrome cards, all provided by Vanquis, but according to the Vanquis website they take 10-14 days to arrive - and I guess I need the card in my hand to make the payment (i.e. know the card details etc)?

How are you going to pay for your monthly expenses ( £1128) until you get paid?

Vanquis will probably give you a £200-500 limit, and say you can have around £100 cash immediately at ~50% APR. By all means apply for one if you want to further damage your credit history applying for a product that will be no use in your situation.

I hope you find this 'helpful'.

I will get half a pay cheque from my previous firm for work up to last week (so about £700) and I have access to a £300 overdraft. The £750 I need is £600 for the fee (it's the UBE fee for the New York Bar Exam under Rule 520.6 of the NY Court of Appeals if you wish to check) and then the excess of my monthly expenses.

Have I passed the test yet?

Hey UTP just for the record I think you've made good choices in that you've qualified and massively increased your salary in such a short space of time. Others may choose to do it differently; so be it.

Is there any way your new job could advance some money to you short term? I bet it wouldn't be the first time they'd seen this situation, esp if (do I recall correctly? ) old job is denying you a bonus. Could your partner help short term as do agree that payday loans are appalling and you have no need of them. Better to sell some stuff I'd say than go there.

Well done on your journey so far. Might it be worth putting an emergency fund together as this is causing some stress for a relatively small sum.

Even if you don't quite get the credit card in time, could you pay the fee out of money you have now and then use the credit card to cover enough other expenses between now and your next pay check?

A strategic decision not to build up savings?

    Sorry but you aint responsible
I don't usually frequent this board but, wow, a couple of posters on here need to get over themselves.

OP, in the short time scales your only real option is a family member / friend, your existing financial accounts, or a CC.

I have in the past used my CC to pay an amount for a relative, and they then paid it back. Is that an option, can someone use an existing CC to pay the bill on your behalf? Can the bill be paid by CC?

Humdinger - thank you so much for your post. It means a lot. I will definitely seek to build up an emergency fund. And thanks for the comment about massively increasing my income quickly. I hadn't thought of that, and it's nice to see that perspective.

Rosemary - that's a great suggestion. I thought I had considered every possible move but I hadn't. What I could do is ask my landlord to use my deposit to pay this month's rent, as we had been considering leaving anyway. I can then use the rent money to pay my fees. Then the bumper pay cheque on December 20 as deposit and rent on a new place. That would (I think) get me through. I'll put pen to paper on the maths to make sure.

Cloud_dog thank you for making my options clear. You're right about what they are.

So my plan for tomorrow is: go to work, get info about credit unions, make some calls to see if I'm eligible, if not (or if it's not confirmed), speak to my supervising partner at work about an advance, if that doesn't work (or while it's looked into) contact friends to see what's possible. If nothing has been worked out by Friday, I shall hand in my notice on the flat and do what I outlined above in response to Rosemary.

Thank you all who have helped!

Check your landlord is happy to accept your deposit as your last months rent, most won't. You won't be evicted in that space, but it won't do you any favours in getting a new flat.

Or come back in 2 months saying 'help, I can't find a place to rent because I don't have a reference even though I'm a very good tenant!'

    Whatever.

    No ones being obnoxious.

It’s called living in the real world not a bubble where you can go back to someone and say “but so and so on the MSE forum said it’s ok”.

You need to look at your outgoings. On those salaries quoted you could have EASILY saved a 4 or even 5 digit sum of money by now.

So clearly you’re not as financially responsible as you think you are.
