No-one's "defending" the deal
Were there always a single cheapest deal that would suit all customers (including those who pay their landlords to maintain their boilers etc) there would be no need for comparison sites!0 -
Martins newsletters have been saying the price is going up and switch if you haven't. For most people who have switched over the summer, this will not be a good deal, in fact probably not find any cheaper deal.
We have known for a while that it is probable in future that smart meters will be a condition of the cheapest tariffs. MSE are supposed to highlight cheapest deals, so that could well be one that requires smart meters. Just because opinion differs over smart meters, are people thinking MSE should avoid tariffs that require smart meters because of political opinion?0 -

Probably, but that post I was replying to was stating how it was unfair for existing BG customers not to be able to get it so they should be able to get this one instead.
In fact if you are a BG customer you should check your online account every month and click the "am i on the cheapest tariff" button. Lots of times I've switched tariff even just a couple of months after the last one, because something cheaper has come along.0 -

For that we got the boiler cover.
We've got a smart meter, was unplugged for weeks, noone noticed.
If it doesn't suit you, fine, go elsewhere.
Can you clarify that this refers to the In House Display monitor and not the actual meter itself.
The IHD is not a meter by the way. Most people unplug it for good after a few weeks .0 -

I'll be going that way if the software doesn't update soon. The "decimal point" bug is showing my gas usage 1000x higher than it actually is.
Does anyone know if it's possible to force a software update rather than just wait for it over the air?0 -
I have tried to switch through MSE to British Gas, for duel fuel, after reading that they're the cheapest at the moment. Today I had an email from BG saying they'll need a deposit of £90 for the electricity account and £125 for the gas account which will be refundable after a year. I've never heard of this before. If I don't pay by 4th November they'll cancel the switch. Looks like they'll be cancelling! Has anyone else heard of this before?0

It is very common. For more see the Citizen Advice Bureau help at https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/nireland/consumer/energy/energy-supply/choosing-and-switching-supplier/will-you-be-asked-to-pay-a-deposit-when-you-sign-an-energy-contract/0 -

Para 5 of the ts and cs. That said, I often wonder what criteria companies use?. Recently, as we were about to move home, I applied for a £25 per month 4G dongle. The response that I got back was that my credit limit was £20 per month. When I asked 'why': the response was 'it is probably your credit rating'. My Experian Credit Rating was 999. I went elsewhere. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
As an influential consumer champion I would have hoped that MSE.
1] would have opposed the roll out of smart meters from day 1 by highlighting the ridiculous waste of £11 billion OUR money , probably too late for that now.
2] persuade the authorities to outlaw any tariff structures that are conditional on anything. All I want to see is simple like for like tariffs that I can compare easily.0 -
