I can't believe MSE news letter "supporting" this tariff. The tarrif is conditional on having a smart meter fitted. I consider this to be little short of blackmail and was the reason for me leaving Fist utility recently which only offered their lowest tariff subject to the same condition. Smart meter roll out is the biggest waste of public money ever , costing £11 billion to produce household savings of £11 per year. I don't know which meters British gas will fit but if they are the "1st generation " meters they will probably not work when you " inevitably " switch from British gas [if you remember] when their tariffs rocket at the end of your 1 year fix.

I couldn't agree more! I just don't understand why Martin Lewis and the Consumers' Association both support smart meters. Some say that the cost will be even more than £11 billion and it's us the consumers who will bear the cost. In these times there are many better ways to spend hard earned taxpayers money.

The newsletter does point out that you must accept a smart meter, and that if you already have one from another supplier it could lose features

The newsletter is a money saving missive!!

All deals have conditions,/TS & CS etc!!
  • There have been a few deals recently but every time I check on my Cheap Engery Club it shows that all other tariffs are more expensive than my current Outfox the market tariff. For example, this deal in the newsletter is showing to be £178 a year more.

Am I missing something obvious here?

    This?
    • There are cheaper tariffs available... but they're variable.
    • If you've already switched in the last year, it's unlikely to be a winner. ...
But if your fix is coming to an end, or you haven't switched before, this is a contender. It's also strong for those who are reluctant to switch other than to a big name.

The MSE newsletter mentions the compulsory smartmeters... however the Cheap Energy Club tariff list makes no mention of this tiny, insignificant little minor detail even in the Feedback &Info section.... Is that not what an info section is for???

The tariff is officially called “British Gas Energy Plus Boiler Cover Oct 2019”

I guess “British Gas Energy Plus Boiler Cover Plus The Compulsory Fitting of Smart Meters Oct 2019” would be just too much of a giveaway.

OP, look on the bright side...at least you got away from Fist Utility before they had a chance to shaft you.

Thanks. Outfox the Market already put their prices up less than a month ago. Are we predicting that they are going to go up again any time soon?

    Is that the royal "we"?

If so, feel free to post your predictions here, along with this week's lottery numbers ;)
  • I am already with BG. How do I get this deal?

I've been on a BG fix for 9 months now & not one call, email etc to suggest I get a smart meter - do you think they are trying to tell me something?

Anyone who believes that the smart meter fiasco is going to do anything other than cost them is living in fantasyland. How they turn £11bn for under 40m households (so about £300 per HH) say it takes 10 years before they have to start again as these new meters don't last as long, so £30 per year per household for ever! In the first few months people will turn things off/down & then it will be too much bother, they will be too busy, they will forget & of course the IHD which they used to find out what they using will barely last the year anyway.
