Query over virgin media recent price hike

Hi. I just received my price rise letter from Virgin... didn't even realise they were putting prices up! So the first place I go online is Money Saving expert... as always. My letter says the rise is £2.99 monthly which does not match the rise in the MSE article. Unless I'm misinterpreting things.
I have 100 mega broadband and phone. Should the rise be not only £1.99?
MSE is the only place I have seen a full breakdown of rises. Can anyone confirm that it should be a £1.99 rise before I call Virgin to complain?
As an aside I need nowhere near 100 mega. More like 20. But Virgin have their 100 minimum and broadband monopoly here. It's like having to buy milk in a minimum size 10 litre bottle when there's no way you'd use it all before it went off. Money down the drain and a sour taste in the mouth.
Thanks in advance.

I read it the same as yourself, I'd query it with them, could be a printing error.
I agree with you about your last point.0 -
Pretty much the same with my account. 100Mb rising by £2.99 although they are also increasing my speed "free of charge" to 200Mb. 200Mb accounts equates to the £2.99 rise, cheeky.0

If you are out of minimum term, they could move you to a different package and start another 12m contract.
They don't advertise all their cheap packages, but plead poverty (say you can't aford it and don't need 100) and they might find a 50mb package.
They even do a limited download package 30/50Gb.
P.S - Last years letter had the wrong increase too.0 -
Might be abit of hassle but with the price rises you are able to terminate your contract with virgin. Have you had a look see if there are any other providers offering cheaper broadband at a better speed for you?0

I got the same letter. It is £2.99 increase as I called them up and politely said I was struggling to justify the ongoing increases.
After 20mins of chat I finally got a £15 a month discount (after pushing back on a £5 a month discount) for 12 months. They also sent me a new router.
I'm on 200Mb + Phone (which I never use).early retirement wannabe0 -

Aren't you confusing speed with a data cap? As for VM having a 'broadband monopoly' you've not heard of ADSL and all the also-rans using an Openreach connection. I know folk going ton VM because their ADSL service was carp and they wanted a faster connection, and only VM provided it.
You get what you pay for - so jump ship and see that the grass isn't really greener elsewhere!0 -
its good there are other companies for competition, else there would be no competition to keep customers, but sometimes sadly some retentions team do not care, as maybe they have met some criteria for their phone calls0

what to wade in with my own experience with the virgin media price hike.
Got 100mb+ phone for £30pm, price increase email says £2.99.
i called them up to cancel contract as i only signed up in may. however i was advised in may when signing up, that i could pay for line rental upfront and make a small saving, so i did.
when i called to cancel, i was told that the line rental saver was non refundable. i would loose the money.
i think its disgusting that companies can get away with such practices.
so rant over, word of warning to others, Line rental saver is non-refundable0 -
There is a thread, in the forum where ppl have been successful getting LR back, so have a read.
But, yes you need to exercise caution with LRS, I won't purchase it for the last portion of an 18m contract.
Had my letter today. Up £1.99. Can leave before 30 Sept0 -
I'm looking at a £2 increase to my Broadband only 'deal'. Just called Virgin to cancel contract to take up the BT deal expiring tomorrow and was told (slightly gleefully) by Retentions that I can't leave until November when my contract expires.
I am so annoyed I might just have two Broadband providers for Sept-Nov just to stick it to them but also because by Nov there may not be any other deals out.
Any ideas?0
