    They lied !

Read the bottom of the letter if you have received one.

"You can change or cancel your package at any time before 30 Sept without paying cancellation charges. Just visit https://www.virginmedia.com/explainmore
    for more info

    I received:
'As you're currently paying £29 a month for 12 months, these changes won't affect you right away. But when your offer ends, you'll start paying the full price for the Player bundle - and this will be going up by an extra £3.49 a month.'
'We hope you want to carry on enjoying all this with us. But if not, don't worry - you can change or cancel your package at any time before 30th September 2017 without paying any cancellation charges. Just click here for more information.'

My question is, Is it reasonable to ask to leave as my price won't actually rise come November?

I want to leave because I think its better to leave because of a price rise than at the end of a contract when they start adding fees for leaving.
  • Of course it's reasonable. They have changed the contract you signed, something the acknowledge with the text you've quoted.

However, if you are leaving to avoid fees when your contract ends, that makes less sense. As once your 12 month term is up, you are free to leave with no penalties. Just ring them up a month before contract is due to end, and give notice of cancellation. It'll be at this point they offer you a decent deal to renew for another 12 months.

they don't add fee's for leaving when you are out of minimum term.

£29 is a good price anyway, so may as well get some more months of that

In a few months I'll go on to a rolling contract at a higher price than the original agreement, as such, I'll be at a material detriment. They have given me 12 months discounted meaning the price rise in November won't affect me, but it will next year.

Can I leave now and claim material detriment will apply in a few months, or will they argue that my contract is 12 months and my price will not change, and I can renegotiate when I approach the 12 month stage?

Do you just have to go on the current contract information, i.e, come next year I will suffer material detriment? Surely you can't take in to account changes which may happen, its about what will happen in the current situation?
  • Mine was going to go up by 3:49 a month
Ive had some success and managed to persuade virgin not to increase my payment by 4 pounds a month so they're going to keep me on the discounted rate until the end of my contract in may next year

I've had the email from Virmin Media too about my fibre broadband increasing and that I can leave "penalty free" if I choose.

However, I've already paid my line rental up front for the year (ends at beginning of Jan), so if I leave now I'll basically be giving them 4 months worth of line rental for nothing. Not exactly "penalty free" so I'm probably better off staying put and re-negotiating in January.

I too paid LR in advance but as usual they cocked up and made it credit on bill so I actually paid this months bill in cash ,all previous bills was paid via the LR deposit.

  • Mine going up by 3.49 to £58 for 70MB / Phone (inc 8 free calls pack ) / base TV
They best they would come down to was £50 - not taken that yet since would lock into another 12 months

Not sure where all these 30 quid deals are ?
